The leaked data showed that at least 180 journalists had been selected as targets of Pegasus spyware in countries like India, Mexico, Hungary, Morocco and France, among others. Kurz darauf zeigte eine internationale Recherche, Projekt Pegasus genannt, dass 50’000 Mobiltelefone und deren Besitzer:innen von der Überwachung betroffen waren. Auch Schweizer Behörden nutzten diese Spyware.
Donncha Ó Cearbhaill ist Forscher und IT-Sicherheitsexperte beim Security Lab von Amnesty International in Berlin. Er führt ein Computer-Forensik-Team, welches sich der Erforschung und Aufdeckung von digitaler Überwachung von Aktivisten und Menschenrechtsverteidigerinnen verschrieb. Seine Forschung leistete einen entscheidenden Beitrag zum ausgezeichneten Pegasus-Projekt, das einer der grössten Überwachungsskandale aufdeckte.
