NW Passages: Poetry reading by Jaiden Dokken Part 1
Jaiden Dokken, will serve a two-year term as Clallam County’s first Poet Laureate. Developed through a partnership between Clallam County and NOLS, a major goal of the Clallam County Poet Laureate program is to use poetry to bring a variety of voices and perspectives to culturally diverse audiences throughout the county, and to bring communities together through poetry.

In current-day Seattle, Gino makes his money writing a phony astrology column and playing fortune teller for party entertainment. Her clairvoyance has destroyed important relationships in her life. When they meet, Gino hopes they can be more than friends. NW Passages-Snow Falling on Cedars Part 1
This is the kind of book where you can smell and hear and see the fictional world the writer has created, so palpably does the atmosphere come through. Set on an island in the straits north of Puget Sound, in Washington, where everyone is either a fisherman or a berry farmer, the story is nominally about a murder trial. But since it's set in the 1950s, lingering memories of World War II, internment camps and racism helps fuel suspicion of a Japanese-American fisherman, a lifelong resident of the islands. It's a great story, but the primary pleasure of the...

Northwest Passages-Pilgrimage to Eternity by Timothy Egan Part 1
From the NY Times review of this book. Egan has become my favorite PNW author. If you’re looking for something to believe in, you could do worse than Timothy Egan’s particular blend of intelligence and empathy. In his ninth book, “A Pilgrimage to Eternity,” this self-described “lapsed but listening” Irish Catholic makes the 1,200-mile journey from Canterbury to Rome along the Via Francigena “on foot, on two wheels, four wheels, or train — so long as I stay on the ground,” as he attempts to decide what he believes. If this book doesn’t quite settle the question of belie...

This is a mix of music featuring artists and songs with a PNW connection. I chose Alice in Chains twice on this show, as I found something interesting online this week. The song Ranier Fog was recorded almost 20 years after the death of the group's former lead singer, Layne Staley. Though the magic or creepiness of AI, someone added his vocals to that song. You can find the version here.

Interview with Dan Brubeck-Brubeck Brothers Quartet
The Field Arts & Events Hall had its debut performance this week, the Brubeck Brothers Quarter, featuring two of the sons of a jazz pioneer, Dave Brubeck. This show includes excerpts of my interview with the very engaging Dan, along with a selection of the group's work. And I played a compare and contrast--the original version of the best selling jazz record of all time, Take Five by Dave Brubeck, followed by the Brubeck Brothers version.

This show is dedicated to the artists featured at this summer's Music in the Park, mostly musicians from the Peninsula including favorites like Black Diamond Junction, Bread & Gravy, Buck Ellard and Jean Lemke. The first 40 minutes or so was not recorded (operator error) but I think you'll enjoy this nonetheless. Music in the Park features free concerts on Tuesday nights at Carrie Blake Park in Sequim and is brought to you by KSQM radio.

The first hour of the show was on the mellow side, including Burl Ives (Anacortes, WA); Louis Armstrong (from soundtrack to Sleepless in Seattle), and Bing Crosby singing about the iconic Black Ball Ferry line. The second half was louder, as we were commemorating three grunge milestones on April 5: the death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain in 1994; the death of Alice in Chains Layne Staley on the same day eight years later; and on a happier note, the 57th birthday of Pearl Jam's Mike McCready.

We are continuing to feature passages from Ken Kesey’s 1964 novel, Sometimes a Great Notion, which has been described as his “opus”. It’s a story about an Oregon logging family led by a strong-willed father who fights with his family, his friends, and many in their small logging town. NW Passages-September #1: The Canoe and the Saddle by Theodore Winthrop
Theodore Winthrop was a New Haven, CT dandy who ventured west to California, the Oregon and Washington Territories, and British Columbia in 1853 to explore the Pacific NW, its natural beauty, and its native peoples. The story of his journey, The Canoe and The Saddle, was first published in 1862, a year after the death of Winthrop in one of the early skirmishes of the civil war. NW Passages-September #2: The Canoe and The Saddle
We’re continuing this week with The Canoe and The Saddle, the account of Theodore Winthrop’s journey to the Washington Territory in 1853, where he shared his accounts of the majesty of the mountains, the Salish Sea, and the native peoples of the PNW. This edition of NW Passages includes Winthrop’s tribute to the mountain he, and the first people—refer to as Tacoma—and what the whites then and today call Mt. Ranier—much to the author’s chagrin.

NW Passages-September #3: The Canoe and the Saddle by Theodore Winthrop
In this episode, we will continue the journey across 1850s Washington Territory as told by Theodore Winthrop, the Connecticut dandy who trekked across the PNW and wrote about it in his book, The Canoe and the Saddle. In this passage, Winthrop tells the story of waking in the PNW forest at sunrise, in an encampment of missionaries, and the profound effect that colors, and light and the land and the vegetation has on him that day, and for the rest of his life.
