We asked a 104-year-old 'super senior' the secret to living a long life. Here's what she said
September 10 was a milestone day at the Donald Berman Jewish Eldercare Centre in Montreal: the staff threw the organization's annual group birthday party for a record number of residents over 100 years old. This year’s 22 “super seniors” include a Second World War veteran, David Kucer, who worked forging metal miniature weapons as collectors items, and also Bella Bernstein, the oldest of the group. At 104, she is a renowned former soprano who performed opera and Jewish music across the community. But it wasn't all smiles and birthday cake. Originally, there were supposed to be 23 seniors to celebrate—until, sadly, o...

"A fire waiting to happen": Canada’s hardest-hit Jewish senior’s home braces for Omicron
In spring 2020, COVID-19 ripped though the Donald Berman Maimonides Geriatric Centre in Montreal. The facility was understaffed and underprepared to begin with, and while it went into strict lockdown and the army was called in, 67 of its residents have since died from the pandemic. The arrival of the vaccine, one year ago this month, was seen as a beacon of hope. This week, the centre hosted a party to celebrate that anniversary. Cards with the phrase "Celebrating our shot at a future without COVID-19" were on display. They brought out cookies and ballons, and a rabbi recited...

Highlights from The CJN's federal debate on Jewish issues
Last night, The CJN and CIJA hosted an election debate on issues that matter to the Jewish community. Our participants were Marco Mendicino, the Liberal minister of immigration; Michael Chong, the Conservative shadow critic for foreign affairs; and Hal Berman, a doctor and NDP candidate in Toronto. The subjects ranged beyond Israel and combatting antisemitism. There are Jewish connections to climate change, Indigenous reconciliation and Canadian foreign policy beyond the Middle East. We asked hard questions to each candidate: Could Berman clarify the NDP's stance on the Boycott, Divest and Sanctions movement? How can the...

Debating the election issues that matter most to Canadian Jews
Tonight, The CJN and CIJA are hosting a federal election debate featuring candidates from the three major parties: Liberal Marco Mendicino, Conservative Michael Chong and New Democrat Hal Berman. The candidates will debate issues relating to the safety of Canada's Jewish community and the country's relationship with Israel. To get a better sense of what those issues are, four Jewish volunteers from across the political spectrum discuss their views on the election and how it will impact the community. We're joined by Green members Corey Shefman, a lawyer running the campaign for party leader Annamie...

Canada’s Oldest Person: Cecile Klein marks 114 years
How does someone live to celebrate their 114th birthday? On today's episode, Ellin poses the question to Cecile Klein, Canada's oldest person. She tells us her secret to longevity: staying active, doing things for yourself, eating steaks (because you still have all your own teeth) and hopping on a cruise to Mexico at the young age of 103. Klein lived on her own, in her own house in Montreal’s Snowdon area, until she was 110, in 2017. Unfortunately, she suffered a fall that year, which landed her in Montreal’s main Jewish nursing home, the Donald Berman Maimonides Geriatric Cent...
