FET #50: Mark Diesendorf on why a renewables grid is economical
A few weeks back, I had engineer Ben Beattie on the podcast to explain some of the unappreciated costs of transitioning to a renewable electricity grid. Before this, Aidan Morrison had explained how many of the costs required to deal with variation in when and where energy is produced from wind and solar were excluded from the (in)famous GenCost report from the CSIRO. Today, Professor Mark Diesendorf, who has studied the electricity grid and energy markets for many decades, provides the counterargument to these claims and makes the case that renewables will be cheaper...

Swanpool Environmental Film Festival: Finding a path to a sustainable future; Finding the Money; And understanding the 'Undercurrents'
The June 15 Swanpool Environmental Film Festival was in equal portions depressing and uplifting - the latter arising from the fact that the Swanpool theatre was full of people eager to understand what is ahead for humanity and how best they could contribute to decisions ensuring the correct path was chosen. The eight-hour festival included the screening of three movies - "The New Corporation", "Finding the Money", and "Undercurrents" by Margot Nash. An intriguing, and almost laughable aspect of the Finding the Money movie was the interview with Jared Bernstein, the Chair of America's Council of...

The word "sustainability" has become cliché, loaded with myths, half-truths and outright lies that try to convince us that a few tweaks to ‘business as usual’ will be enough. What then, does ‘sustainability’ really mean? A fundamental problem requires fundamental solutions - yet these are often completely ignored. In this talk at the Conservation Council, sponsored by Sustainable Population Australia, Rod Taylor digs into the themes of the in The Path to a Sustainable Civilisation co-authored with Mark Diesendorf.

We are certainly living in precarious times. We have transgressed six out of nine planetary boundaries (with more to come). The gap between the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ is beginning to look less like a gap and more like a chasm. The threat of wide-scale war looms large. After 2020 Mark suggests solar thermal and pv, as well as geothermal can potentially supply all our energy needs. He also calls for a moratorium on new coal fired power.
