These questions have sparked high profile class action lawsuits and government consultations on potential reform. Andres Guadamuz is a Reader in Intellectual Property Law at the University of Sussex and the Editor in Chief of the Journal of World Intellectual Property. Robots behaving badly: legal responsibility in the age of artificial intelligence
Andres Guadamuz In 2014, the conceptual art collective !Mediengruppe Bitnik programmed an autonomous online agent (a bot) to purchase random items from the dark web with a weekly budget of $100 USD in bitcoins. During his ongoing experience, the Random Darknet Shopper has purchased jeans, generic Viagra, cigarettes, collector’s coins, and instructions on how to hack a Coke vending machine. But perhaps the most interesting item arrived in 2015, when the artists received 10 yellow ecstasy pills inside a DVD case. Whatever happened to our dream of an empowering Internet (and how to get it back) (en)
Early techno-utopianism envisioned an Internet filled with opportunity, where the network would empower people to become better citizens. With a world of information at our fingertips we would be able to transform lives, become more informed, better connected, more engaged in democratic processes. The reality has been unkind to this dream, with fake news, trolls, online bullying and abuse rampant, our dream of a positive Internet has taken a few hits. This talk will try to put forward several ideas of how to recapture the dream of an empowering and positive Internet. Andres GuadamuzBack in 2006, Time magazine awarded...

What is music? With IP scholar Joe Fishman, we talk about music to work by, whether being unable to imagine doing anything else is a sign you’re doing the right thing, and, mostly, what in music should be protected by copyright. Is the essence of music just melody? And should copyright aim at any such essence? How does our choice about legal protection affect the kind of music people make - and should we worry about that? Why am I asking so many questions? Will these show notes ever end? This show’s links: Joseph Fish...

Build Your Own World: User Generated Content, Second Life and Creative Commons
Andres Guadamuz is an academic interested in the ownership implications of new technologies; in particular he researches intellectual property issues in User Generated Content and the so-called Web 2.0 phenomenon. He delivered a presentation in which he looked at the creation of urban spaces within so-called virtual worlds, such as the popular environment known as Second Life. He asked about the ownership issues that surround the creation of intangible property, putting forward the idea that we already have legal tools to think about virtual existence.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ULSSeminars/~4/n99J4-pRYy4" height="1" width="1" alt=""/>
