The Dave Bowman Show
Dunmore's Proclamation
The year was 1775, and Virginia stood at the edge of a storm. In the calm before revolution turned to full war, one British governor, an imperious Scotsman named John Murray, Fourth Earl of Dunmore, issued a decree that would send shockwaves through the colonies and echo across centuries. From the deck of a British warship anchored off Norfolk, Lord Dunmore declared martial law in the colony of Virginia. More explosively, he promised freedom to “all indentured servants, Negroes, or others, appertaining to Rebels,” who would bear arms for the King. It was November 7, 1775, and in one stroke of the pen, Dunm...

Dunmore's Proclamation
On November 7, 1775, from the deck of a British warship anchored off Norfolk, Virginia, Lord Dunmore issued a proclamation that shook the colonies to their core. The royal governor declared martial law and promised freedom to any enslaved person who would take up arms for the King.It was a desperate act, meant to crush rebellion and strike fear into Virginia’s planters. Instead, it ignited outrage among Patriots and inspired thousands of enslaved people to risk everything for liberty. In trying to save the Crown’s authority, Dunmore revealed the Revolution’s deepest contradiction: a nation fighting for fr...

Dunmore Has A Tempting Offer–November 7, 1775
Lord Dunmore was driven from the Governor’s Mansion back in June, but he never went far. That same day he took refuge on a British ship near Williamsburg and continued playing the role of Governor, even though the House of Burgesses was already doing quite nicely, thank you. Slave revolts were a constant concern in the slave states, and Dunmore was almost certainly inspired by an incident just a couple of days earlier during the Battle of Kemps Landing. An enslaved man, serving alongside the British regulars, came face to face with his former enslaver, Joseph Hu...

Roots of Today
Lord Dunmore's Proclamation and the Ethiopian Regiment
Today we journey back to November 7, 1775, and a dramatic, startling document known as Dunmore’s Proclamation. We'll explore the life of its issuer, John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, the events that led him to issue it, and the astonishing—and tragic—fate of the men and women who answered its call. The proclamation had immediate and longer-term impacts. In Virginia, the slave-owning class was galvanized into deeper resistance; the idea of armed Black men fighting for the Crown radicalized the social order. Across the wider war, it set a precedent for British policy—most notably the 1779 Philipsb...

Revolution Revisited
Dunmore’s Proclamation Freedom, Fear, and Fallout
The real heroes in this story are the enslaved people. These people who left their homes based on very little information in order to seek freedom, I think, underscore the terrors of slavery and the fact that people were willing to take enormous risks to find a better life, even if it was a very, very big gamble. In this episode of Revolution Revisited, host Maggie discovers how words on a page began a path to freedom for thousands of enslaved people and reshaped a nation. June 8, 1775: Lord Dunmore Checks Out
In the aftermath of the Gunpowder Incident, Lord Dunmore decided that the better part of valor involved getting out of town before the locals could get a good lynch mob together, and he left Virginia on the HMS Fowey. Here’s the interesting part: the Fowey which Dunmore boarded was not the first of its name; in fact it was the fifth. But the other interesting part is that it was the second one of that name to sink in American waters. The fourth HMS Fowey was a fifth-rate vessel (remember, ratings refer to the nu...

March 28, 1775: Lord Dunmore Makes Noise
One of the interesting things about many of the British officials who were around during the early days of the American Revolution is that most of them were actually pretty good at their job. It’s just that they were given rather thankless tasks to do which wound up backfiring on them. And then there’s John Murray, the Fourth Earl of Dunmore. History has not been especially kind to Lord Dunmore, not should it be. He often acted rashly and without consulting some of the people he should have consulted, and in the end he wound up g...

And when you are speaking about historical romance, one of our all-time favorites, you can't help but go down the rabbit hole of Hallmark Christmas movies (trust us, it's possible), and things that make you feel like you've just been offered a warm chocolate chip cookie and a massage. Dunmore Cave & Viking Massacres: A History From The Underworld
This history of Dunmore cave is mysterious and gripping. Around the year 930 the Vikings massacred large numbers of people in a battle fought around the cave. By the 18th century some of the earliest explorers found large numbers of human remains scattered across this extensive tunnel system. While this may be evidence of a brutal Viking massacre, recent archaeological excavations and analysis have suggested the full story may be more complex. In this episode myself and the archaeologist Neil Jackman joined guide John McInerney and ventured into Dunmore Cave to record a show in this fascinating...

Lord Dunmore's War: Last Indian Conflict of the Colonial Era
On February 1, 2018, Glenn F. Williams delivered a Banner Lecture entitled “Lord Dunmore’s War: Last Indian Conflict of the Colonial Era.” This lecture explained the causes and conduct of the last Indian War that took place before the start of the American War for Independence. Set during what some would call the “Quiet Time,” many historians pay it little attention or misinterpret its historical significance. However, John Murray, fourth Earl of Dunmore, the last royal governor of Virginia, led the colony's soldiers “in his majesty’s service” in a defensive war that culminated in a successful offensive military expedition before the deepening co...
