Eritrea exposes the Politicized UN Human Rights Council
This episode dives into tghe Statements from Eritrea's Minister of Information and Ambassador Sofia Tesfamariam, who collectively argue against the United Nations Human Rights Council's (UNHRC) targeting of Eritrea. Both contend that the UNHRC's mandate concerning Eritrea is politically motivated, rather than based on objective human rights concerns. They suggest that Western states exert undue influence, using human rights mechanisms as tools for foreign policy and to penalize Eritrea's independent development path. The authors assert that this politicization undermines the UNHRC's credibility and impartiality, fostering a system where sovereign nations face selective punishment while others are shielded. Ultimately, the...

Meron Estefanos is a Swedish-based Eritrean human rights activist and journalist, who works tirelessly to aid and raise awareness about the plight of Eritrean refugees, who have been kidnapped, tortured, raped and held for ransom in the Sudan and the Sinai. In her efforts to rise up against the dictatorship in Eritrea she is engaging researchers in Ethiopia, who she has been paying with bitcoin. What Eritrea Wants
The international community has long viewed Eritrea as a pariah state, yet the country’s influence is rising again in the turbulent Horn of Africa region. For more than a decade, Ethiopia and the West pushed the country’s regime under President Isaias Afwerki into survival mode. But with the political transition in Ethiopia, and Eritrea’s alliances with Gulf powers across the Red Sea, Asmara is once again looking to shape the region in its favour. Harry Verhoeven, a scholar on international politics in Africa, joins Alan Boswell to unpack Eritrea’s rising influence in the region an...

Ethiopia, Eritrea, and the Conflict in Tigray with H. E. Brita Wagener
The conflict in Tigray, the northernmost region in Ethiopia and just south of Eritrea, grows increasingly worrisome, yet very little concrete information about the events has been available. This is largely a product of Ethiopia’s media blackout in the region, which has left the outside world with little insight into the growing humanitarian crisis. H. E. Brita Wagener, former German Ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union (2017-2020), discusses the crisis in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, its complicated political and ethnic history, and efforts by the international community to learn more and to resolve the conflict. FORMER PRISONER IN ERITREA: “I’m Amazed I’m Alive!”
Helen Berhane was a well-known worship leader and gospel singer in the churches of Eritrea when the government outlawed evangelical churches. In one week churches went from meeting openly to underground, meeting in homes and hiding from police. In the midst of that crackdown, Helen was arrested, beaten and put in prison. Listen as Helen shares how she prepared her heart, ahead of time, for the days she would face persecution. She’ll talk about the Scriptures she drew strength from, and how she was able to keep singing praise to God, even as her su...

Alan is joined this week by Martin Plaut – author, journalist and now Senior Fellow at the University of London – who has covered Eritrea’s trajectory for almost 40 years. Together they explore how Isaias has maintained his unyielding grip on power while pursuing his geopolitical ambitions in the region and further afield. Martin describes a country pervaded with regime paranoia, extreme domestic repression, and isolationism that has somehow also managed to leverage itself into strategi...

Ruth from Eritrea : Fleeing persecution, finding safety in Tasmania
A common response when I've mentioned Eritrea is "Where is that?" or "I've never heard of that country". Eritrea is a country on the Horn of Africa, bordering Ethiopia, Sudan and Djibouti, which gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993. Since then it has been a one-party state with, according to Human Rights Watch, one of the worst human right records in the world. As a result, many Eritreans have fled the country to escape persecution or the country's compulsory and indefinite military service. In recent years, more and more Eritreans have settled in Tasmania, with the community now estimated in the...

Mange troende sitter fengslet under umenneskelige forhold.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Eritrea has the most censored press in the world –behind North Korea and Azerbaijan. Since the government banned private press in 2001, many journalists have been abducted or imprisoned without trial, including those who had reported on divisions within the ruling party. Over the years, officials have offered inconsistent explanations for the arrests – accusing the journalists of involvement in anti-state conspiracies or skirting military service.
