What if you could listen to multiple people at once, and actually understand them?More like this: **The Age of Noise w/ Eryk Salvaggio**In our final instalment (for now!) of Nodestar, Andrew Trask shares his vision for a world where we can assembly understanding from data everywhere. But not in a way that requires corporate control of our world. If broadcasting is the act of talking to multiple people at once — what about broad listening? DOGE and the United States of AI
Across the United States and in some cities abroad yesterday, protestors took to the streets to resist the policies of US President Donald Trump. Dubbed the "Hands Off" protests, over 1,400 events took place, including in New York City, where protestors called for billionaire Elon Musk to be ousted from his role in government and for an end to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has gutted government agencies and programs and sought to install artificial intelligence systems to purportedly identify wasteful spending and reduce the federal workforce. In this conversation, Justin Hendrix is joined by four...

Episode 75 Meta Ends Third-Party Fact-Checking: Implications for Users and Society
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has decided to end its third-party fact-checking program. This move was announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a video titled “More speech and fewer mistakes.” According to Zuckerberg, the decision to remove fact-checking is driven by the belief that fact-checking organizations have been politically biased and have undermined trust.Instead of relying on third-party fact-checkers, Meta will implement a new system called “Community Notes.” This system, similar to the one used by X (formerly Twitter), will allow users to add context and corrections to posts that may contain misleading informat...

Should AGI Really Be the Goal of Artificial Intelligence Research?
The goal of achieving "artificial general intelligence," or AGI, is shared by many in the AI field. OpenAI’s charter defines AGI as "highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work,” and last summer, the company announced its plan to achieve AGI within five years. While other experts at companies like Meta and Anthropic quibble with the term, many AI researchers recognize AGI as either an explicit or implicit goal. Google Deepmind went so far as to set out "Levels of AGI,” identifying key principles and definitions of the term. Today’s guests are among the a...

What are the actual affordances, complexities, and realities of artificial intelligence for the #arts and cultural sectors? How do we ensure that creators are able to experiment and are not exploited? What does this mean for arts and cultural workers, who need to possess the technological and aesthetic understandings that ensure wise, forward thinking and make ethical choices? Navigating the Age of AI Noise: Art, Datasets, and the Cultural Impact of Generative Models w/ Eryk Salvaggio
In this episode, host Mack Hagood dives into the world of AI-generated music and art with digital artist and theorist Eryk Salvaggio. The conversation explores technical and philosophical aspects of AI art, its impact on culture, and the ‘age of noise’ it has ushered in. AI dissolves sounds and images into literal noise, subsequently reversing the process to create new “hypothetical” sounds and images. The kinds of cultural specificities that archivists struggle to preserve are stripped away when we treat human culture as data in this way. Eryk also shares insights into his works like ‘Swim’ and ‘Sounds Like Mus...

My guests today are Eryk Salvaggio & Caroline Sinders. What role do artists actually play in society? What about in the development of AI? It’s easy to speak in vague, grandiose terms about the power of art, but when do the actual actions, techniques, and interventions of artists amount to real-world impact? I’m not saying that art needs to lead to impact, but it’s important that we’re clear about the moments it does so that we can learn from the ways it did and to what extent it was successful. More broadly, it helps us see t...
