Processing our Connections to the El Paso Massacre
The Latinx community is still reeling from the El Paso massacre. Like others, we continue to process and come to terms with our new reality. For this episode producer, Filiberto Nolasco Gomez gives Tor, a native of El Paso, a chance to speak to what they have been experiencing. This was a hard episode to record, but we felt it was important to share our thoughts as our community collectively processes the hostility of white supremacist terror. Ultimately continuing to do what we do is our most excellent defense against acts of terror....

Not About You
Filiberto Nolasco Gomez | Season 3 Episode 4
“Just because it’s journalism doesn’t mean it has to be unattractive. It can feel good, too.” Filiberto Nolasco Gomez grew up in a working-class Mexican community in Eastern Los Angeles. On this episode of the podcast, he talks about how much his name means to him and how challenging it seems to be for folks to pronounce it correctly. He also talks about citizenship, the real work of being a journalist, what music means to him and how masculinity operates as a means of survival and sometimes a barrier to connection. Filiberto is the edito...

Chaun Webster - GeNtry!fication
Poet and graphic designer Chaun Webster draws from an interest in the work of sign in graffiti, the layering of collage, and the visuality of text. These methods are used in Webster’s work to investigate race – specifically the instability of blackness and black subjectivities, geography, memory, and the body. Correspondingly much of these investigations engage the question of absence, how to archive what is missing from the landscape particularly as a number of communities watch in real time, neighborhoods once populated with familiar presences, dissolve in the vernacular of redevelopment and its attendant colonial logic.

Manchita
Twin Cities' own rap 'hellion,' Manchita (GRRRL PRTY, Tha Clerb), recently released her debut sola project, One, with Minneapolis-based producer-performer-composer, Bionik (Aaliyah, R. Kelly, Lizzo). Though Bionik is known for his danceable, in-your-face, pulsing, electronic bass music, the EPs production showcases an unexpected moodiness, tenderness, and an attention to subtlety that is made visible and is amplified by the gritty content of Manchitas words, and her whispy falsetto. As a whole, the project reveals a more introspective, heavy-hearted body of work centered on love, loss, and survival.

Gustavo Lira

The word “Cuicani” is a Nahuatl word that means “Singer.” We chose this name because we felt it evoked the importance of exercising one’s voice, and also of giving a voice to the voiceless. Established in 2012, Cuicani’s eclectic mix of members reflects the diversity of the city it calls home. In our three years together we have written and recorded over 15 original songs with themes such as: environmental justice, immigration rights, and protesting police brutality

Social Justice Artist Ricardo Levins Morales
Ricardo might possibly be the most interesting man in Minneapolis. Walking into his studio is an education in the diverse nature of social justice movements since the folks that commission his work are broad and geographically dispersed. Everything from images about Angela Davis to pieces that represent the fight for worker rights. During our conversation he was carefully scraping clay and ink creating a new graphic about climate change. Has he describes it his work is a lot like song writing, hes telling a story with the images. His work can be found here, http://www.rlmartstudio.com

Chicano Batman
We had a great wide ranging conversation in Los Angeles. Chicano Batman's sound is best described by bassist Eduardo Arenas as a 1980s backyard carne asada and their soundtracks. Lyricists Bardo Martinez talks about growing up in La Mirada and needing music to help him get past the largely white society. Finally, we get into really fun anecdotes about playing in far out places like touring Japan through “Barrio Gold” records and performing before a japanese drag queen rock band.
