An Unfamiliar Faith
by Fr. Benedict Kiely . Anecdotal evidence, while not necessarily without value or verity, needs solid facts to become confirmed as reality. For the last several years, there has been much talk of increasing numbers of young people, particularly men, coming to orthodox Christianity and, in particular, to the Catholic Faith. These stories now have a factual basis. More than 10,000 people were baptized or received into the Church in France last year. In other European countries and the United States, more people came into the Church at the Easter Vigil than has been the case for decades. Something that...

#087 - Fr. Benedict Kiely - Why The Media Is Silent On The Global Persecution Of Christians & Erasure Of Their Faith
Father Benedict Kiely is a priest of the Anglican Ordinariate of the Roman Catholic Church. He is the founder of nasarean.org, a charity that supports and advocates for persecuted Christians across the Middle East and beyond, offering practical aid to displaced families and small businesses. In this conversation, Father Benedict and I think out loud about the persecution of Christians in the middle East and Nigeria, the day-to-day struggles faced by Christians in predominantly Muslim countries, the nature of Christian persecution in Britain and what's behind it, why the media pays little attention to the ongoing...

The Two Lungs of Pope Leo
By Fr. Benedict Kiely. People of a certain age may remember the words of Pope St. John Paul II reminding the Western Church, in particular, that the Church is a body with two lungs, the West and the East. And to be fully itself and spiritually healthy, it needs to breathe with both those lungs. While for years he was speaking of the Eastern Churches behind the Iron Curtain, he often also referred to the truly ancient Churches of the East - in the lands where the Church was born. Is it coincidence or providence that in the...

Looking Steadily
By Fr. Benedict Kiely. Among the defining features of much of contemporary society are both distraction and lack of attention, which are not necessarily the same thing. We are most certainly distracted by the multiplicity of social media, the inability to concentrate, and the sheer omnipresence of noise and visual distraction. This then leads to lack of attention, an unwillingness, almost certainly not entirely willed, to be able to focus on any one thing for any length of time. And particularly with the lack of silence, our attention can veer away from God, towards the mundane and the insignificant.

Benedict Kiely on Pope Francis and the State of Jewish-Catholic Relations
The Catholic cardinal Jorge Mario Bergolio ascended to the papacy in 2013. In honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, he chose as his papal name Francis. For a dozen years he was the head of the Catholic Church and a major figure in the moral and cultural life of the West. After a prolonged illness, Pope Francis died on April 21 of this year. There are over 1.4 billion Catholics in the world, and they play a significant role in the production of Western culture and Western opinion. In Ukraine and China, a power-obsessed Vatican is betraying heroic Catholics
Four million Christians in western Ukraine belong to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, which since the end of the 16th century has adhered to a Byzantine rite while recognising the authority of the Pope. For this reason these Ukrainian Catholics are despised by the Russian Orthodox and its political masters: Stalin tried to force them to become Orthodox again and threw their leader, Cardinal Slipyi, into jail, where he remained from 1945 until 1963. And how was his heroism rewarded? Pope Paul VI denied him the title of Patriarch and, after Vatican II, the Catholic Church set about Westernising their traditions – for...

Why should persecuted Christians trust Pope Francis?
Beijing's new rules for clergy of all religions in China have been published in English – and, disastrously for the Vatican, they make no mention of any role for Pope Francis in approving the appointment of Chinese Catholic bishops. President Xi appears to have reneged on the agreement – having achieved his aim of breaking the back of the underground Catholic Church in China. Reports of the debacle have come at a very inconv...
