The King's Hand in History
The 1775 Continental Congress and Its Last Petition for Peace and First Declaration of War (Ep. 49)
On July 8th, 1775, the Second Continental Congress sent their Olive Branch Petition to King George III, in a last-ditch effort to persuade him to hold back the might of the British Army from waging war against the American colonies, and to let them live without hindrance. Although it inevitably failed to change anything about the British policies toward the colonies, it showed that there were many among the American leaders that still wanted harmony with the British government. In spite of this sentiment, they approved A Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms the next day...

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, Acts 4 and 5
On The Literary Life podcast this week, we will wrap up our series on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Our hosts, Angelina, Cindy and Thomas walk through the last two acts of the play, sharing their thoughts on the structure and ideas presented here. Angelina talks about why she thinks Shakespeare resolves the different conflicts the way he does. They discuss the importance of the play within the play, the fairy tale atmosphere, and the unreality of time and space. Cindy and Angelina both bring up plot points that feel slightly problematic to them. Angelina highlights the them...

"The Good Old Days", and The Deception of Nostalgia
Do you year for the days of yore? You know, a simpler time when people didn't have to give a damn about each others' feelings; the days when, if one got sick, one simply prayed to whatever god one was allowed to believe in at the time. Ah yes, the days long forgotten, and the days we all talk about. Wasn't that great? Wasn't it fun wandering off to school at 6:00am so that you could play in a creek, and cut a vein open on a rusty nail? That actually happened to one of my mom's brothers by the...

Think of Victorian England and images of cobbled streets, horse drawn carriages, mills and towering chimneys come to mind and of course, gas lamps flickering through the swirling fog that always seemed to linger much longer during the latter end of each year and into the New Year due to the wetter conditions and stillness of the air. The North West of England had encountered such thick fog during the second week of January 1888, causing four days of unprecedented havoc in places such as Liverpool as it practically brought the canals and other sea faring traffic to...
