S3 E38 Tinfoil Turfgrass: More Granular and Foliar Iron Nonsense for Your Lawn.
In this video, I critique “Found the Best Iron to Apply to Your Lawn For Summer Color” by a former golf course superintendent. While I agree that iron can boost turf color without pushing growth, I question some of the application advice—especially the dosing schedule and lack of soil pH context. I break down what the original video gets right, what it misses, and share my evidence-based tips for using iron effectively this summer. If you want deep green turf without wasting money or product, this video’s for you. 👍 Like, comment, and subscribe for more tu...

S3 E35 Which Turfgrass Uses the Least Water? Surprising Results from Oregon Research
In this episode of Turfgrass Epistemology, we dive into a study from Oregon State University that looked at how turfgrass species and mowing height affect water requirements in western Oregon. The results might surprise you—tall fescue and perennial ryegrass significantly outperformed fine fescues when it came to conserving water. We’ll break down the data on evapotranspiration replacement, irrigation intervals, and how mowing height can influence your watering schedule. Should you mow higher? Should you convert to tall fescue? This video gives you practical, science-backed guidance on how to choose and manage turfgrasses for water conservation.

S3 E18 Do Irrigation Intervals Affect Turfgrass Rooting?
In this video, we delve into the 1985 study by Peacock and Dudeck, titled "Effect of Irrigation Interval on St. Augustinegrass Rooting," published in the Agronomy Journal. The research examines how varying irrigation intervals—every 2, 3, 4, or 6 days—impact the root mass and length density of St. Augustinegrass. Interestingly, the study found that root development remained unaffected across these intervals, suggesting that less frequent irrigation may not compromise root growth. These findings have significant implications for turfgrass irrigation practices, potentially leading to more efficient water usage without sacrificing turf quality. Constants in the turfgrass growth potential equation
The PACE Turf growth potential equation has one variable (the actual air temperature) and two constants. The constants are optimum air temperature and a term for variance that controls the shape of the curve as the actual temperature moves away from the optimum temperature. It's a little more complicated than that, because the constants change depending on whether you are making the calculation for cool-season grass, warm-season grass, and on whether you are using the Fahrenheit temperature scale or the Celsius temperature scale. The blog post discussed is https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/calculating-gp/PACE Turf climate appraisal...

Achieving the desired turf surfaces by thinking backwards (or why reactivity can beat proactivity)
I discussed an approach to turfgrass management that involves considering the current turfgrass conditions and then deciding what to do. One is beside the road on one of my regular running routes, and another is on an island. Neither are mown. Both receive traffic in some areas and not in others. There is a remarkable difference in turfgrass appearance and quality as a lawn or sporting surface, based only on the amount of traffic received.See more turfgrass info from...

What the ATC Doublecut is all about
Hi. I'm Micah Woods, chief scientist at the Asian Turfgrass Center. That's more than a thousand posts about all kinds of turfgrass topics --- playing conditions, fertilizer, soil tests, grass selection, sustainability, frost delays, growth rate --- pretty much everything that I've been interested in.In this ATC Doublecut series, I'm discussing some of these same topics. Mostly it's the new blog posts, the most recently published ones, but I may take a second...
