Bangladesh ousted ex-PM Sheikh Hasina sentenced to death for crimes against humanity
Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity over her government’s violent crackdown on student-led protests last year. The 78-year-old fugitive politician is on trial in absentia for being the “mastermind and principal architect” behind last year’s suppression of mass demonstrations, in which some 1,400 people were killed. The 2024 uprising ended Hasina’s 15-year “authoritarian” rule marked by allegations of suppression of dissent, and extrajudicial detentions and killings. What do the student protests signify for the Sheikh Hasina regime in Bangladesh?

The takeaways from Sheikh Hasina’s visit
Managing a difficult relationship has brought dividends to both India and Bangladesh. By all accounts, Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Sheikh Hasina have transcended many barriers and rapids to take their relationship in a direction that benefits both countries. Mr. Modi appears to have put some distance between his Home Minister Amit Shah’s use of the term “termite” when referring to Bangladeshi immigrants and the potential of bilateral ties. Sheikh Hasina’s visit shows that with due preparation even an agreement to share the river waters of the Kushiyara is possible even as an accord on...

India is committed to helping Sri Lanka during its worst times of economic and political distress. India is playing a crucial role in assisting the island state from destabilising and reviving its economy. The new leadership in Pakistan has a very tough challenge ahead. We see a rising anti-China sentiment in Balochistan, which has been at the heart of CPEC. As we look towards the east, our north-east has to be the bridge that connects India to South East Asia. In light of this, Sheikh Hasina's offer is in line with the sentiment. Biden's visit has given a message that...
