Hillhead Harbour
Today's episode was recorded at Hillhead harbour, a very small harbour next to a nature reserve. There are ducks, swans and geese from the nearby nature reserve in the water, and cylclists, joggers, dog walkers and cars on the mainly quiet road behind me. I hope the sound of the wind hitting the rigging and masts of the boats in the water is soothing. Please subscribe if you liked today's episode, and do share it with someone if you think they would like it too. You can send a voicenote to me using this link...

The Trepanned Skull
In 1903 an excavation at Hillhead Broch, a rather morbid discovery was made: a fragment of a human’s skull. This portion of bone – a fragment of the ‘parietal’ section of the skull – was notable for the presence of three drilled holes, which were set out in a roughly triangular shape. It is thought that the skull had been modified ‘post-mortem’. Why? Location: National Museum of Scotland, Chambers St, Edinburgh EH1 1JF Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The New Elizabethans
Roy Jenkins
The New Elizabethans: Lord Jenkins of Hillhead. Jim Naughtie considers the politician, Roy Jenkins who left the Labour Party to set up the Social Democratic Party. Roy Jenkins made the journey to Government from a school in south Wales, via Oxford University and a spell at Bletchley Park. He held high office in a Labour government but never made Prime Minister. He became the first British president of the European Commission and after disaffection with the direction the Labour party was taking, he was one of the co founders of the Social Democratic Party. Edinburgh International Book Festival
Alasdair Gray (2011 event)
Thirty years ago Lanark was published, which confirmed Alasdair Gray as the most ferociously inventive Scottish writer of his generation. His output since then has been characterised by a close relationship between his writing and his singular image-making style. Already the author of much-admired murals, he had just finished a new public art project at Glasgow Hillhead subway station when he came to the Book Festival and held audiences captive with his remarkable stories of life and work. This is the full event, recorded live at the 2011 Edinburgh International Book Festival.
