From Birmingham to Paris and Beyond: Lucille Sinclair Douglass (1878–1935)
Alabama-born Lucille Sinclair Douglass was a globe-trotting artist, etcher, writer, and lecturer whose adventurous spirit defined her career. After exhibiting in Paris’s top Salons, she landed in Shanghai, leading a lantern-slide studio and launching a life of travel through South Asia. Her work—ranging from book illustrations to a French government commission at Angkor Wat—blended artistry with exploration. When she died in 1935, her ashes were scattered at Angkor, a poetic tribute to a life devoted to discovery.More on Lucille Douglass: reidhall.globalcenters.columbia.edu/content/lucille-douglass-1878-1935The Reid Hall Histor...

He worked to recruit and lead Black troops...

Accordingly, he was described by abolitionists in his time as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that people of African descent lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. Douglass it seemed understood better than most people of his time the intrinsic value of personal freedom and di...

Frederick Douglass and the 4th of July
On July 4, 1852, Frederick Douglass delivered remarks of enduring significance and American eloquence to an audience of abolitionists. He mixed condemnation of the nation's tolerance of slavery with hope and uplift. He embraced the founding fathers and defended the Constitution while attacking his fellow citizens for hypocrisy and inaction. "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth Of July?" was quintessential Frederick Douglass. Historian James Oakes discusses the ideas behind Douglass' rhetorical tour de force, his relationship with Abraham Lincoln, and the critical importance of antislavery politics in bringing about the destruction of slavery.

“What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?”:: Frederick Douglass 1852 ::
What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July? (Performed by Actor, James Earl Jones) “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” is a speech by abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Douglass, who himself escaped enslavement years before, gave the speech on July 5, 1852 at an Independence Day celebration in Rochester, New York. During the 1850s, Frederick Douglass typically spent about six months of the year traveling extensively, giving lectures. During one winter -- the winter of 1855-1856 -- he gave about 70 lectures during a tour that covered four to five thousand miles. And his speaking engagements did not halt at the...

In 1845 two thinkers from the American hemisphere – the Argentinean statesman Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, and the fugitive ex-slave, abolitionist leader, and orator from the United States, Frederick Douglass – both published their first works. Each would become the most famous and enduring texts in what were both prolific careers, and they ensured Sarmiento and Douglass’ position as leading figures in the canon of Latin American and U.S. African-American political thought, respectively. But despite the fact that both deal directly with key political and philosophical questions in the Americas, Douglass and Sarmiento, like African-American and Latin American thought more generally, are never...

The murder of America's 35th president on the streets of Dallas is one of the darkest chapters in U.S. history. Because of the non-investigation investigation of the event by the government-appointed Warren Commission, scores of books have been published, attempting to fill in the blanks. A growing consensus see NOT a lone nut assassin -- but a plot involving established elements of U.S. power. A recent book not only adds to that consensus -- but more importantly -- looks much deeper into the question of WHY. Its examination explores the American psyche and that which is "unspeakable," that...
