James Yorkston - Tommy The Bruce
For the latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast Ali spoke to singer-songwriter and author James Yorkston to talk about his latest novel, Tommy The Bruce - which is published by Oldcastle Books. James gave a brief synopsis, before explaining why this was a story he wanted to tell, why the small-town setting is crucial, creating the central character of Tommy Bruce, the importance of understanding the motivations of all his characters, his hotel experiences, and why it is hard to escape your formative years. The two also discuss James' writing processes, whether that be in fiction...

James Yorkston & The Second Hand Orchestra
Scottish singer/songwriter James Yorkston released his 10th studio album The Wide, Wide River as James Yorkston & The Second Hand Orchestra earlier this year. After almost 20 years playing with band members who were often friends (The Athletes, Yorkston/Thorne/Khan and the Fence Collective among others) he teams up with a collective of Swedish musicians, most of whom he had never met before the studio recordings. This brave experiment works lending the songs an air of surprise and a lightness of touch while lyrically tackling themes of loss, ageing and depression. 'Sometimes you have to shake things up...

folk musician James Yorkston
On today's episode I talk to musician James Yorkston. Originally from the village of Kingsbarns, Fife in Scotland, James has been playing music since he was young, and was an integral early member of the Fence Collective, a collaborative group of musicians that included groups like The Beta Band. James spent years honing his craft was eventually championed by John Peel and John Martyn after he sent them tapes of his music. James Yorkston
VIPop #35 Without looking for it in the least, James Yorkston has become a kind of master-standard of folk-music ... For the last twenty years, this Scottish singer-songwriter has made this territory his playground and exploration, by bringing in a pop and libertarian spirit, in particular ... And he's as moving as he's just on totally stripped down songs that he's warmly communicative on songs with more lyrical flights, often shared with other excellent musicians ... And you know why ? ... Simply because James Yorkston has a talent and a heart so huge ! ❤ … Sans le chercher le moins du monde, James...
