Ми вже з’ясували, що у давньоукраїнську мову воно запозичене через церковнослов’янську (І҆ѡа́ннъ) з давньогрецької — ІОАННІС (’Ιωάννης). Туди ж воно потрапило з давньоєврейської — ЙОХАНАН (Yôḥānān). Буквально означає «Ягве (Бог) змилувався, змилосердився, помилував». Можна перекласти і як «Божа благодать, Божий дар». То ж зрозуміло, що це ім’я має багату історію. І його уподобали не лише в Україні, а практично в усіх куточках Європи. Щоправда, у багатьох народів воно набуло інакшої подоби. Іноді настільки відмінної, що не відразу й упізнаєш.
