타이베이역에서 이란역으로 가려면 몇 가지 대중교통수단이 있는데, 하나는 지난 주 소개해 드렸던 쉐산 터널(雪山隧道)을 경유하는 고속버스, 다른 하나는 지룽과 신베이시를 경유하는 기차입니다. 고속버스를 선택한 경우 출퇴근 시간, 금요일과 일요일 등 러시아워를 피하면 1시간 이내 도착할 수 있고, 기차를 선택한 경우 약 1시간 반 정도 걸리지만 타이완 동북부의 해안 풍경이 한 눈에 들어오는 재미가 있습니다.
오늘 시간이 선택한 코스는 기차여행입니다. 이란역은 타이완 기차역 중 아주 특별한 존재인데요. 이란역에서 나가자마자 기차역 위에 머리를 내민 기린, 하늘을 나는 기차, 그리고 토끼 모양의 풀숲 앞에 버스를 기다리는 소년소녀 등 대향예술장치를 볼 수 있습니다. 마치 토끼굴에 떨어진 앨리스처럼 여객들은 순간에 동화속의 주인공이 되었습니다. 여기는 이란 출신인 유명 그림책 작가 지미 리아오(幾米 Jimmy Liao, 본명 랴오푸빈 廖福彬)의 작품으로 꾸며진 원더랜드, 지미공원입니다.

20여 년 동안 70여 종의 출판물, 180여 권의 외국어 작품을 출판한 지미는 중화권 뿐만 아니라 미국, 유럽까지 국제적으로 명성을 떨치는 타이완 동화 작가입니다. 타이완, 홍콩, 벨기에, 스페인, 스웨덴, 포르투갈 등 나라의 중요한 상을 수상한 바 있습니다. 지미란 이름은 영어 이름인 지미(Jimmy)에 자신이 좋아하는 한자를 연결시켜 만들어진 필명입니다. ‘어른들을 위한 그림책’이라는 취지 아래 성인 독자를 겨냥해 현실적인 스토리와 환상적인 장면을 결합하고 지미만의 환상세계를 구축합니다. 부드럽고 따뜻한 그림을 통해 어른들의 마음을 위로해주고 시적인 표현으로 그림책을 또 다른 문학의 장르로 만들어 냅니다.
광고회사에서 10여 년 동안 일해온 지미는 병에 걸린 후 집에서 휴양하면서 일러스트와 그림책을 창작하기 시작했습니다. 병세가 호전됨에 따라 1998년부터 《왼쪽으로 가는 여자, 오른쪽으로 가는 남자(向左走，向右邊走)》,《지하철(地下鐵)》, 《달과 소년(月亮忘記了)》, 《별이 빛나는 밤(星空)》등 그림책을 출판해 점차 회자가 됩니다. 지미의 작품들은 동화책에만 그치지 않았습니다. 영화, 연극, 뮤지컬, 드라마, 애니메이션, 전시회, 대형예술장치 등으로 각색되어 다양한 형식으로 더욱 널리 알려졌습니다. 지미공원은 바로 지미의 대표작들을 현실로 옮기는 마법의 공간입니다.
2013년 고향 이란에 보답하고 폐 공간을 활용해 관광산업을 촉진시킨다는 의미에서 지미는 이란역 앞 광장과 폐기된 철도국 기숙사를 개조해 타이완 첫 번째 지미공원을 설립했습니다. 지미공원에는 주로 세 개의 공간이 있는데, 우선은 《별이 빛나는 밤》을 바탕으로 만들어진 ‘숲의 기차역(森林火車站)’과 ‘별밤의 기차(星空火車)’입니다. 《별이 빛나는 밤》은 외로운 소녀와 신비스러운 소년의 만남을 그려내며 이 세상에 나만 홀로 있다가 내 마음을 알아주는 사람을 만나지만 결국 헤어지게 되었다는 성장 이야기를 다룹니다. 소녀와 소년은 서로를 지친 현실에서 벗어나게 해주는 마음의 탈출구입니다. 두 사람은 어릴 적 소녀가 살았던 할아버지의 옛집을 구하려고 모험을 떠났습니다. 책에서 등장한 숲, 기차, 별이 빛나는 밤 모두 이란역에 재현되고 백에 있는 기린은 마치 숲의 관리원처럼 여행 중인 소녀와 소년, 그리고 이란을 오가는 여객들을 수호합니다.

다음에 ‘별밤의 기차’가 소재하는 위치는 이란역 맞은편의 ‘띠위띠위당아(tiu tiu tâng 丟丟噹, 丟丟銅仔) 숲의 광장'입니다. 띠위띠위당아란 이란의 타이완어 동요에서 유래하고 기차가 터널을 지나갈 때 터널 위에서 떨어진 물방울의 소리를 흉내 낸 의성어입니다. 해당 광장은 이란으로 이주한 건축사 황성위안(黃聲遠)의 작품으로 옛 이란의 명칭 쥬츙(九芎)성을 상징하는 쥬츙 나무, 즉 남방배롱나무로 구성되어 있습니다. 19세기 청나라 정부는 이란을 관리하기 위해 남방배롱나무를 성벽으로 하고 ‘이란성’을 구축했습니다. 황성위안은 이란의 역사와 지미의 작품을 연결시켜 《별이 빛나는 밤》의 주인공들이 남방배롱나무 사이에서 하늘을 나는 기차를 타고 두 사람만의 여행을 떠나는 장면을 재현합니다. 매일 오후 5시에 불을 켜면 지미가 그린 별이 빛나는 밤은 눈앞에 생생하게 펼쳐져 수많은 독자들에게 무한한 감동을 가져옵니다.
여러 태풍과 새의 둥지로 인해 2022년 별밤의 기차는 개축공사를 실시해 지미의 다른 작품에 등장한 캐릭터의 예술장치가 추가되었습니다. 《숲속의 비밀(森林裡的秘密)》의 토끼는 트럼펫을 불면서 기차를 맞이하고 있고, 《미소짓는 물고기(微笑的魚)》에서 작은 어항을 안고 있는 남자는 “집에 데려다 줄게”라고 중어걸리며, 《지하철(地下鐵)》의 눈이 안 보이는 주인공은 대합실에서 기차를 잘 못 타거나 역을 잘 못 내리는 여객을 동반합니다. 지미의 유니버스는 띠위띠위당아 광장에 펼쳐집니다. 이제 소녀와 소년은 더 이상 외롭지 않은 거죠.
