The Thing but 2011 - Caravan Of Garbage
In 2011 Universal had the absolute audacity to release a prequel to John's Carpenter's The Thing telling the story of the Norwegian camp we briefly saw in the original. With Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton in the lead it seems as if a genuinely solid attempt was made at recapturing the magic of the first before studio interference didn't do justice to the original practical special effects by papering them over with rushed CGI, diminished character moments and re-edited story beats. 11. You Can't Take It With You with Cisco Scartozzi
This week's episode is brought to you by . . . audio issues. So being the massive attention-to-detail person that I am, I can certainly tell you that even though I was speaking into my mic, it was DEFINITELY plugged into the computer. It definitely wasn't hanging down the side of my desk, plugged into nothing at all. The audio isn't the best, but it's certainly not the worst. I do my best to put out the highest quality I can, but I am only one moron, so in an effort to save time, I did not re-record the episode.

We bring the 2nd Unit back to dip our toes into Development Hell once again...kind of! As a pseudo-sequel of our Superman Lives episodes, we dig into the history of what was supposed to be Justice League: Mortal, the short-lived but fascinating first attempt at the superhero team-up. Directed by George Miller, written by Kieran and Michelle Mulroney, and starring a surprisingly young cast including Armie Hammer, Common, and Jay Baruchel, this goofy comic-book-accurate project met insurmountable obstacles on the way to production. We break down the full cast and story of this project (thanks in large part...

Precinct 13: The Movies and Music of John Carpenter
The Thing (2011)
Ever wonder what happened before MacReady and the boys went toe-to-toe with alien terror in John Carpenter's 1982 classic The Thing? Well, we didn't really, either, but leave it to Hollywood to show us the mysterious backstory that Carpenter's film left tantalizingly out of reach. 2011's The Thing, a sort of grotesque, body-horror hybrid of prequel and remake, takes place a few days before the original and tells the tale of the Norwegian research base that made the colossal mistake of not letting sleeping extraterrestrials lie. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen, Jr. and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton...

THE THING (‘51 / ‘82 / ‘11): Who Goes There?
There have been three adaptations of John Campbell’s short story: THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951), THE THING (1982), and THE THING (2011). Just like their monster, these movies shapeshift with their era: Is the alien a metaphor for the atom bomb, or Communism? Masculinity or feminism? Across these decades, each movie showcases wildly different special and visual effects, while tackling the themes of their era. We discuss how the classic 50s sci-fi, directed by Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks, pits scientists against the military, while John Carpenter’s remake, starring Kurt Russell, Keith David, and Donald Moffa...
