波士頓書評 Boston Review of Books Podcast吳晨逸 | 一個後理想主義者的悲觀：記John Dunn慶應大學演講Can Democracy Be Rehabilitated?2026年1月，劍橋大學榮休教授、政治思想史家John Dunn（約翰·鄧恩）赴日本東京，參加櫻田會（Sakuradakai）百年紀念事業首回「櫻田會牛津劍橋講座」系列，在慶應義塾大學發表題為《Can Democracy be Rehabilitated?（民主能否被修復？）》的演講。在演講中，他批判性地剖析民主的歷史起源、現實缺陷與未來可能性，強調民主需面對權力、信任與全球挑戰的根本問題。波士頓書評特別邀請慶應義塾大學政治哲学研究生吳晨逸，記錄Dunn講授的這次訪問。吳晨逸結合自己的觀點，記錄了John Dunn的演講《一個後理想主義者的悲觀——記John Dunn慶應大學演講》。2026年的年初，日本剛結束正月的長假。一位85歲的英國耄耋老人佝僂著背坐在慶應義塾大學。在這所日本最早的系統性教授西洋學問的私立學府的教室裡，來自日本各地的政治經濟思想史研究界著名學者濟濟一堂，想要聆聽他的教誨與省思。他便是約翰.鄧恩（John Dunn），這位跨越了20世紀的著名學者是西洋政治思想史研究的劍橋學派的代表人物之一。他出生於第二次世界大戰之中，成長於激進民主運動風起雲湧的60年代的。日本施特勞斯學派，隨著早稻田大學幾位曾留學芝加哥大學的施特勞斯派學人的離世而漸漸式微，因而當下的日本政治學界也以承繼劍橋學派以嚴謹與實證所著稱的方法論的學者居多。因此，鄧恩這次來到日本講座，劍橋學派的眾多日本弟子也來到現場。鄧恩在慶應大學發表的兩場講演，一場名為《Can Democracy Be Rehabilitated? （民主能否被修復？》）一再地表述著他自二十多年前起便反覆思考寫作的對民主之病灶的診斷，而另一場則是回溯著自己八十餘年的學術與成長經歷，直到對當下政治的反思。在此前，我最早於中文語境裏看到鄧恩的演講，竟是在以國家主義與民族主義立場而聞名的中國媒體「觀察者網」上。訪談中，他批評西方現代的民主制度，而對中國這樣一個效率制的「人民民主」的國家倒是頗有讚許。在中國國內，似乎無論是自由派知識分子抑或是國家主義者，都擁戴這樣一位對政治思想的歷史做出重要貢獻的研究者。思想史這個學科似乎總是看上去與政治現實有著一種調情的曖昧，他們既不是遠離現實的形而上學思辨，也非立場顯明的政治表態，那種帶有距離感的批判性使得他的學說也能在中國的民族主義媒體需要時適時地被取用，作為批判美式民主霸權的背書。在訪談與其他談及中國的論述中，你既能看到他不時客觀地評價著中國模式不同於西式民主的效率與穩定，但又不會看到他如一些情迷社會主義理想的西方左翼學者展現出近乎非理性的諂媚讚許。已經讀過其關於民主之著作的我，對他所闡述的關於民主的觀點早已不那麼陌生，不過依然會從他對自己學術生涯的追憶與回顧中，獲得頗有啟發的視角。鄧恩説起他最早的政治意識並非始於劍橋的學院拱廊，而是作為一個外交官之子的顛沛流離的童年。在講演的開頭，他回憶起戰後漢堡的廢墟——盟軍轟炸機完成任務後留下的斷壁殘垣、德黑蘭街頭富人與赤貧者之間那道令人窒息的鴻溝，英國大使館如何暗中策劃推翻穆薩台政府收回石油收入。因為沒有那筆錢，戰後的英國幾乎破產。鄧恩這麼表述他來到劍橋時的感觸：「我所關心的世界遠遠超出了低平的劍橋沼澤地。對於其絕大多數居民來說，這個世界迫切需要補救。」他期待劍橋能告訴他如何補救這個世界。那三年的本科時光主要花在審視各種聲稱能提供補救措施的主張上，而他總是帶著悲觀的慨嘆回應：「令人沮喪的是，幾乎沒有什麼成功。」講到這裡，鄧恩的敘述轉向了他與劍橋學派另一位重要人物昆廷·斯金納的友誼——兩位年輕學者如何在二十世紀六七十年代的劍橋，共同挑戰當時占主導地位的政治思想史的研究方法。當時主流政治思想史是那種把政治思想從其歷史語境中抽離出來，當作永恆問題的永恆回答。鄧恩和斯金納共同持有的信念是：「這是一種極其愚蠢的看待一個本質上是歷史性主題的方式，而理解它的唯一方法必須是盡可能清楚地把握它發生在何處、何時，以及最重要的是為何發生。」這就是後來被稱為「劍橋學派」方法論的核心——語境主義的歷史研究，強調政治文本是特定歷史情境中的言語行動(speech act)，而非脫離時空的哲學命題。我倒是對此頗有懷疑，總覺得某種程度上，施特勞斯學派並非不注重歷史的實證與對思想家的語言之還原，只是在其寫作中的確有著更為關心和在意的問題，劍橋學派的鄧恩與斯金納顯然更願意將自己定義成職業的歷史學者而非哲人。洛克的研究與自由主義的根基如果說鄧恩的政治關懷源於童年經歷中所感受到的道德震撼，那麼他在學術上的第一個重大發現，則來自對洛克的研究。因此，演講也很自然提到洛克的研究。鄧恩的洛克研究緣起帶有劍橋特有的學術傳承色彩。他本想研究休謨的政治義務理論，但指導教授福布斯（Duncan Forbes）不願讓別人染指休謨研究，於是把他轉給了彼得·拉斯萊特（Peter Laslett）——那位剛剛編纂出版洛克《政府論兩篇》的學者，鄧恩被指派追蹤這部著作在通往美法革命那個世紀裡的命運，以及洛克。然而，在研究過程中，他注意到了一些「真正重要的東西」——洛克對政治的整體理解，依賴於他對自然法的思考方式，而這又依賴於一種「關於人類和他們所生活的世界是唯一全能、全知且可辨認為基督教的上帝之造物」的觀點。簡而言之，這個結論的學術意義在於：一旦上帝被拿走，洛克的政治願景就失去了任何連貫的支撐。鄧恩引用洛克自己的判斷，以威廉·波普爾（洛克的《論宗教寬容書信》，由William Popple從拉丁文原文翻譯成英文）的翻譯說道：「即使僅在思想中拿走上帝也會瓦解一切。」聽到這裏我不禁回想起自己對自由主義的關切與追問似乎某種程度上呼應著鄧恩在洛克研究中的讀解，儘管鄧恩與斯金納在上個世紀六七十年代就洛克闡釋的問題與施特勞斯的弟子們爭論不休（施特勞斯學派將洛克視作自由主義的先驅）。在劍橋學派的對手列奧.施特勞斯的著作裡，他同樣也將自然權利的歷史還原到古希臘的自然正當（natrual right）中，以此去批判現代自然權利如何放棄了對城邦之自然正當之追問，而是收縮到個體的維度。此種價值的收縮同樣也奠基與整個宗教改革以來聖經闡釋權的下放所帶來的個人主義傳統，而現代個體正是在由洛克所論述的這樣一種神人關係中，將自由主義的社會所需要的絕對價值作為整個秩序之根基確定下來，從而才使得現代的自由主義傳統得以可能。而在啟蒙運動之後由啟蒙理性所開啟的世俗化進程之中，我不禁想追問：如果洛克式的自然權利理論在剝離其神學前提後無法自立，那麼我們這些不再相信上帝的現代人，究竟憑什麼引用《獨立宣言》聲稱擁有不可剝奪的權利？鄧恩自己「早已不再相信上帝」，但他認同洛克的這一判斷。這種認同不是對信仰的追悔，而像是一種悲觀的慨嘆，作為一位已經不再信仰上帝的無神論者，慨嘆我們政治語彙的根基比我們願意承認的更為脆弱。這是他的第一個重大發現。第二個研究的發現，則關乎民主本身。“民主並非一個確定的理念或政治形式，因此不可能通過它來清晰地理解政治。”他在演講中這樣說，語氣平靜，卻帶著某種宣判的意味。”這不是一個反民主的政治結論，但它仍然是一個緊迫的政治警示。”在櫻田會所主辦的那場演講中，他把這個判斷展開得更為詳盡。民主作為一個範疇，實際上是三段相當不同的歷史：一個詞及其翻譯的歷史；那個詞所喚起的一堆雜亂理念的歷史——這些理念彼此沒有明確聯系，常常相互沖突；以及那些聲稱體現這些理念並從中獲取合法性的多樣化政權的歷史。“民主不是一個透鏡”他說，“它只是一個非常非常大的、令人不安而無形的話題。” 鄧恩試圖通過對歷史的爬疏去揭釋的是民主作為一種「話語」的轉變，這也是基於語境主義的方法論，從而民主的勝利視作某種「知識即權力」的話語爭奪。對於深陷於民主危機中的西方而言，對民主的反思是一種反叛的忠言逆耳。只是我對於反思民主危機的視角卻頗有懷疑，如果民主僅僅是一個「話語」的勝利，那麼我們如何解釋冷戰後這30年來，世界歷史中相對而言難得一見的繁榮與穩定呢？或許另有時間我想單獨來討論以鄧恩為代表的這種民主理解。在鄧恩關於民主的演講中，他運用了一個隱喻：「復健」（rehabilitation）。這個詞原本指從重病中逐漸恢復健康，或幫助刑滿釋放的囚犯重新融入社會。他提出：如果我們將這個隱喻套用到民主身上，首先必須追問三個核心問題：民主過去究竟擁有過哪些能力？是什麼導致它喪失了這些能力？如今是否還有機會讓它恢復？以此為起點，鄧恩繼續展開對當前民主危機的診斷，他指出兩個主要病因：其一是經濟權力的集中。這是一個由來已久的問題，早在17世紀的歐洲思想家就已察覺：若要讓國家行動真正服務於大多數人的利益，最頑強的障礙始終是高度集中的經濟權力。在那些成功大幅壓縮經濟不平等、卻沒有引發安全與繁榮災難性崩潰的社會，通常是透過「有意識的、相當自由的政治選擇」才實現的。然而，不知何故，在過去幾十年裡，這種選擇正被逆轉，而且往往又是透過同樣自由的政治選擇來完成的。其二，被鄧恩稱作注意力的貨幣化（monetisation of attention）。這則是一個全新且前所未有的威脅。鄧恩認為，驅動這場資本主義對民主的加速傷害的單一核心機制，正是「注意力的貨幣化」，以及它所造就的難以想像的財富規模與集中度。極少數
