There And Back
A vvery difficult track to process with Suno. The Lyrics did not seem to work with any genres, the vocal would not sing them in the way I wanted them too. It even refused to copy the way I sang them on an audio upload. A quite slow song mixed a few syllables on some lines with more on other lines in the same verse. The AI just couldn't seem to work with the lyrics at all. Finally tried a "cool jazz" genre. It gave me a song, but not what I wanted. One to come back to! If you...

Dr John
I have no idea where this song came from, except I had not long picked up my PhD award from my university. Not a serious song, but no other explanation for the theme. This was 1980 and was quickly forgotten. Finding it again, it provided, I thought, a wonderful chance to try out a barber shop, close harmony group. I honestly liked the result (first iteration again!) and so , probably unwisely, decided to upload it to Soundcloud.

Fantasies
A light-hearted song, Believe it or not, at this time in my song writing, I was often inspired by popular song titles, to write some of my better lyrics. This one was inspired by "In My Room" by Brian Wilson (of The Beach Boys). Just the title, the lyrics are obviously something different). You might also notice one or two allusions to the real world in the song, John Wayne, Superman, Valentino. One allusion you might not place is that New York was called New Amsterdam until 1660 (approx), it was originally founded by Dutch Traders. I must have read it...

I can't stop singing
The first use of the new Suno v4. Excited to try this as sound quality is claimed to be better. Difficult to tell on this track, although I prompted for the backing to be minimalistic. It starts off very good but depending on your sound system you may think differently. The AI has chosen to include clapping rather than bass or drums, etc. This can be heard clearly by using headphones or external speaker (I assume) but with an internal speaker is not so easy to tell. The clapping morphs into applause as the track ends. I have edited the...

Don't Set Me Free
Song written by John Dyhouse (early 1960's) and bought up to date using SUNO AI v3,5. The AI was prompted by using an audio clip of me singing an acapella version of the song, this enables the AI to model my voice and use the original melodies (verse/chorus/ bridge, etc. This is a song which I found difficult to match with any of the genres/styles which I initially tried to use. Some songs do seem to fall into a category where this happens. Sometimes I get lucky, sometimes I rewrite or heavily edit the lyric to get a...

Tell me what to say
Settling in to using Suno to demo my songs. I am now uploading samples of me singing (acapella) the first verse and a chorus up to the 60 sec max allowed. This prompts the AI to adopt and use my voice which means all my songs have a standard voice if I prefer ( and thank you, auto corrects the pitch) and also prompts the AI with the melody and the way I scan the lyrics (all provided). I can structure the song (sometimes the AI follows the prompts) and add sections of music and request what instruments are used. The AI...

Remember Me (1)
I wrote these lyrics about three years ago, long before I had coe across AI assisted music. And It was a song I liked very much, in fact a ukulele demo was posted on soundcloud 3 years ago. The danger with prompting with the existing lyrics, is that it is not always possible to force the AI to create a song with a familiar tune. But I thought I would try with this one. Not easy and not helped by the random decisions by the AI engine. (programmed like this so it does not create the same song from similar prompts). ...

Should True Love Be Discouraged
Acoustic ukulel backed version of this early song, #1 in my back catalogue. Written in early sixties. But this is not the first song I wrote, just the first one I entered into the first of my lyric notebooks. Very simple chord progression, I must have just learned about adding a flattened seventh to move from I to a IV chord. (cf the first two lines of the verse). Just a couple more to come from this era, I think, before I move on with later songs and even new songs.

Depression (ukulele demo)
One of the very earliest of my original songs, presented here as a simple (and quick) ukulele demo. I think I was probably thinking of Bob Dylan when I wrote this, at least that's my excuse. For info, this was numbered #7 in my catalogue now numbering above 250.

Sunny Day - guitar demo
Another in the series of early, original songs from my back catalogue. This is a "pop-py" song with a jazzy vibe; being written in the early sixties, unfortunately I have no dates in my note books for this period. Trying to feature a little lead playing on this short song.

I Saw You Standing-uke demo
Another of my songs from my early lyric notebooks, again this was written in the early sixties (1960s). It is as the title suggests a ukulele demo; as there are a number of issues I have with remembering the song fully, I was happy enough to use the uke on this track.

You Don't Love Me No More (guitar, demo)
This is a "special" song for me as it was probably the first song I ever wrote after I had my first guitar. from memory it was written around 1959/1960 and shows it's age in the lyrics. Almost embarrassing now because of the lyircs and especially the rhymes, which I would never dare to use these days; but I was only 13/14 at the time. The song structure is also very much of it's time, with a very short bridge, but probably called a chorus at the time. It is included here as one of a number of my older songs which...

Written 1978, another of my older songs I am trying to get off the pages of my notebooks. Here, especially in the bridge I am having trouble with the melody/chords but after a little more work on it, I expect to rewrite and re-record and then re-load the corrected track. I am choosing this way as there are many songs I hope to post here with more detail (melody/chords) than simply the lyrics from a notebook page.

Shadows Of The Past
This is the first of two more songs I wrote within a month of each other in 1979. Neither song became a song I sung often and would have sunk into obscurity except for the entry into my catalogues of lyrics. These songs were completed (but both quite short) but because of being seldom performed the melodies were mostly forgotten and I never even recorded the guitar chords to help me resuciate them and so were almost lost as the years past. A song I love by Ruth Nina Welsh from her album, "Somehow". (find Ruth on Facebook and Spotify and here on Soundcloud) A simple melody and wonderful lyrics. If you like this kind of music, I do recommend that you check her albums on Spotify. In a few words... "having a little fun". In 1979, yes another old one, I was taxi-ing my son and two of his friends to their their first communion lessons, at the local church. On the way home, they were talking excitedly about the previous evenings TV. Specifically about a cartoon show with a wicked wizard. At home later. Life Is Cruel (Life's A Joker)
A litle bit of an experiment in a slow time with songwriting for me; possibly in the early 80's. I retold the story of Tom Dooley in my own words and with a new melody. Liked the words but not the new tune. It has lain dormant in one of my lyric notebooks. ever since. But while looking thru one particular notebook for some songs to record (at long last), I sang this and thought, well if only for the lyric..... and it was a bit of fun. Get On Your Bike - original song - ukulele demo
For some time this year, I have had a very dry period as far as new songs were concerned. The basic idea for this particular song came to me whilst on a daily exercise trip to my local park. My wife was busy feeding the birds and some one who was old enough to know better came speeding past on a push-bike, no real problem, plenty of room, but this phrase which became the title would not go away and I spent the whole walk around the lake composing the lyrics. This And That (2023 version)
An update of a recently posted track, remixed and mastered. The second in a proposed collaboration between myself (lyrics and melody, and lead vocals) and the arranger/producer (backing vocals and all instruments). BTW, the bottled beers were found quite recently and we thought they would make a great image for this track. My thanks to the brewery.

That's How I feel (uke demo)
A first version for demo purposes, with ukulele. I always (well almost always, these days use a ukulele for writing songs. Easy to grab hold of when in the mood and feeling motivated/inspired. This is one which has been around for a little time and has been put on the "back-burner" but I do like the idea and so am still working on it. It is here to remind me to get it sorted!

Babe I Get This Feeling (2023)
So excited to share my first song with a fully instrumented backing. I was offered the chance by a friend to have guitars, bass, percussion and backing vocals on one of my songs. I jumped at the chance and enjoyed singing over the final arrangement. I am so pleased with the outcome. Would love to get some feedback. Thanks in advance if you can spare time to take a listen. Please note, I have changed the image on this track! This red strat was gifted to me at the time, and I associate it with this arrangement BUT it is...

book of rules - ukulele
A playlist for acoustic, quick and dirty versions of newly self-written songs. Mainly to remember what they sound like, the melodies and scanning (with some wordy lyrics). In the past I have come back to songs written years previously, which never became part of my regular choice for singing. They will often be arranged for guitar now that I am using a guitar again. This makes it even more necessary to store them as I can mix up the harmonies - guitar and uke use the same chord shapes but ukes are tuned a fourth higher than the guitar. Changing...

I'm Down (original song)
A complete change of direction for me with this song. Actually an old song (80's) but I wanted to experiment with my guitar pedal chain which includes overdrive & distortion pedals. So far, I had not used my new toy(s) to their full extent and this gave me an opportunity to let rip.

Still I See You - original song
An updated version of this old original song, with my new red Franken partscaster guitar. I have not been playing guitar for a few years and am currently trying to catalogue my old songs, so not looking for professional quality recording - yet, I may replace the file in the near future.

the one who sang the song - acoustic remix
This is one of a series of eight tracks which I recorded back in the early years of my writing. I captured these songs on a digital camera with video capabilities. I was happy with most but one or two should have been given another take - I suggest, you may think more. But things are what they are. I have stripped the audio track from the video (original video on my You tube channel) and posted them on Soundcloud close to 10 years ago. I have now available, the ability to edit and manipulate the audio tracks. Just for purely...

its later than you think - acoustic mix
An acoustic version of this song, originally posted elsewhere as a video. The track was stripped from the video in audiotonic (audacity clone) and edited for bass/treble balance and added reverberation. Part of a series of early videos which I am revisiting and hopefully improving the sound of.

This 'n' that - Fender Stratocaster guitar, original song demo
You can see me actually playing this song, on You Tube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shV2BYs1Jd0 - sounds the same tho'. An oldish song which has been posted elsewhere as a video. The soundtrack has been stripped in audacity; and then edited to balance the bass and treble and add reverberation. Part of a small series of early recordings. Just me and the Strat.Apart from the later edits (bass/treble and reverb) original recording (several years ago) was a "clean" signal no pedal effects, etc.

when you were sweet 16
A cover of what has become to be known as an Irish folk song due to its success when recorded by The Fureys. It was actually written by an american and has been covered by many singers. This is a revisited recording of mine, from the 1970s. Remixed to improve bass/treble balance and add reverb.

Ain't No Body Home - Original song
This is something quite different for me, usually, I get ideas for songs "out of the blue" often whilst busy doing other things. But I have noticed that my songs are becoming "samey" with respect to the chords I use and the melodies, which use limited diatonic notes from a limited number of keys, I use. This time, I had done a little research into music theory techniques, and set out to use modal interchange to inject little variety into the melodies and harmonies. I am very pleased with the result and shall be repeating the experiment.

Baubles & Blue Skies - Original song
I rarely have much to say about why or how I arrive at a particular song / song title and this one is no different. I often hear a phrase or a chord squence (it could be either) which starts me strumming and singing. I often am not even conscious of where the ideas come from, so what can I say. They are unlikely to arrive out of the blue but don't expect a clever answer. Just enjoy! I hope.

My recording is thanks to my laptop -not the best of equipment but I can see/hear where I am going wrong; which is why I am recording anyway. This one was particularly difficult because I over-recorded a second uke part and had to hum along to get the timing right. It is nearly there as you can hear from the increased echo effect where the second track is about .005 seconds out, but it was the best I could do with my simple recording software. Anyone in the Solihull / South Birmingham Area of the UK would be welcome to come...
