July 22: Psalms 56 and 57, Ezra 10:1-17, and John 1:1-28
Only God knows fully the reason that John was so closely tied to the work of Jesus, but the work he did as an itinerant preacher gives us a pretty good idea: the Law was passing away as the main method God used to form his people, and John was the first messenger of the new way. He had his own set of disciples, but the ultimate goal was still Jesus. (Even John's disciples were recorded as being baptized again into the Spirit after Pentecost.)

While outliving your peers comes with its share of sorrow, we might be reminded that the beginning of Revelation was a reminder of the need for the prophetic voice, something John certainly had and which God needed him to keep exercising.

Here's a wild idea to consider: the "other disciple" that knew the high priest and got Peter entrance to the yard was probably John himself. He often referred to himself in his own book in the third person. Peter being questioned as "also" being a disciple might imply that John was already identified as one, but John was still respected enough to get Peter into the courtyard. If this is the case, Peter's denial is all the more crushing: he stood near another disciple and claimed no connection to Jesus. This is indeed a sad erosion of the core...

January 1: Psalm 1 and 2, Genesis 1, and John 1:1-28
The Gospel of John was the last gospel written, and John starts with an agenda: Jesus was God, part of the Trinity from the beginning. As we also read Genesis 1 today, particularly the plural way that God refers to God’s self (in “our” image), we remember that Jesus was always God remains God, and was God from the beginning.

July 30: Psalm 74, Nehemiah 9:1-15 and 26-38, John 5:25-47
Jesus does not come out of nowhere. John has prepared the way, and God the Father is empowering him. What does this mean? That God has intentionally come to live among men, to show what God is really like, with an introduction from a man (John the Baptist). It is an interconnected web called the Kingdom of God, and we are living in it now if we are living in Christ.

July 22: Psalm 56 and 57, Ezra 10:1-17, and John 1:1-28
The book of John was written well after the other gospels, and is full of Jesus’s divinity. Of course, Jesus doesn’t levitate a foot off the ground the whole time. He’s still God Among Us, and the incarnation of Christ among people is just as important as the fact that Jesus is, in fact, God. And to kick things off, the apostle John, author of this book, presents John the Baptist. These aren’t the same person, each have their own role to play as the Kingdom of God unfolds.

May 20: Psalm 49, Ecclesiastes 6, and 3 John
The little book of 3 John has a neat glimpse into one aspect of the early church: traveling teachers. With John’s calling out of those who receiving them both poorly and well, we also get an idea of the way churches needed to work together in those days. There was no email, no telephone. Letters such as John’s were expensive to write and commoners probably seldom did this. To correctly pass along the good news (and remember that there were also false teachers), it was important to have teachers who spoke the Word correctly move around. Seems like we h...

May 19: Psalm 46, Ecclesiastes 5, and 2 John
2 John is one of the shortest books in the Bible, but its repeated themes from 1 John really reinforce the struggle that the earliest Christians faced: who Jesus was. It probably became somewhat fashionable to come up with an alternate version of Christianity, especially one that might have been easier to understand than the Jesus that has come to be understood through the centuries. Don't take the easy road, though. Knowing Jesus is knowing the process of formation, and that means allowing our understanding to be changed.

December 27: Psalm 141 and 142, Revelation 19, and John 21:9-25 (Feast of John)
We actually have two writings from John today, on the day of his feast. Remembering him is best done with both Revelation and his Gospel. He makes a point of shooting down the idea that he would live forever, but it's more than verification of him as some sort of super hero. He would never want to distract from what Jesus has done and will do, and we see that in Revelation, as Jesus begins to judge the powers. It's a Lord that John would never try to upstage, even in his own book He doesn't even use his...

November 30: Psalm 78:19-40, Ecclesiasticus 11:1-9 and 18-28, John 1:35-42 (Feast of Andrew)
Today we remember Andrew, who was an apostle of John, then followed Jesus. That is kind of a wild part of his life to consider: he heard John’s preaching and wanted to be his disciple. But John’s purpose was to point to Jesus, and he could scarcely hold anyone back from finding that ultimate truth. So should it be with us: while we might be tempted to promote our own talents, the best we have to offer is still Jesus.
