Dean grew up in Iowa, graduating from Hull Western Christian High School in 1976. In high school, Dean participated in Cross Country, Basketball, Track & Field, and Golf. He attended Dordt College playing both golf and basketball from 1976 - 1980. Dean earned a B.A in Physical Education and a minor in Business. After graduating, Dean moved to Arizona, teaching and coaching at Grace Community Christian School from 1980 - 1984. He spent 17 years as a sales agent with Allstate Insurance Company, as well as coaching soccer, softball and basketball.
