BC Government Strengthens Mental Health Act
British Columbias government proposes significant updates to its Mental Health Act, aiming to enhance protection for healthcare workers treating involuntary patients. The changes, announced by Premier David Eby and Health Minister Josie Osborne, seek to modernize a decades-old Act that currently offers limited legal safeguards. The amendments aim to clarify the Acts purpose, ensuring treatment for those unable to seek it, and reduce confusion in care provision. British Columbia currently has over two thousand involuntary care beds, with plans to open more in Maple Ridge, Surrey, and Prince George.DNN | The Daily News Now!The world’s fi...

‘It’s a public health emergency’ - that’s what Delta Councillor Dylan Kruger calls a 12 hours shutdown of his community’s only ER. A doctor staffing shortage is being touted as the cause of the fourth emergency room closure at Delta Hospital this year. It happened Saturday night, forcing emergency patients to be redirected to Surrey or hospitals on the other side of the Fraser River. Kruger says Health Minister Josie Osborne did not take-up his request to meet about this situation at last week’s Union of BC Municipalities conference.

How effective will the province's plan to implement involuntary care be to alleviate crime and get people unable to care from themselves off the street?
The provincial government has announced that Surrey and Prince George will be getting 100 new involuntary care beds. Premier David Eby says there's a huge urgency to expand access to beds close to communities. We hear from Surrey city councillor and mayoral candidate Linda Annis, and Prince George councillor Trudy Klassen who have been calling for involuntary beds for their communities. D.J. Larkin and Kora Debeck question its effectiveness and B.C. Health Minister Josie Osborne give us an idea of what the plan will be to expand this service.
