Valentine is an isolated West Texas community with its own radio station. It is really remote. The next nearest settlement, Marfa, is 30-minutes drive! How Local News Was Teased On Radio In The 90s
Back in 1996 this is the sort of local news teaser a small AM station in Gloucestershire was running, before IRN. Proper news, that wasn't a cut 'n' paste fluff job, bloody banal vox pop or PR-invented 'insert name here' piece about how the town has the sexiest residents! How things have changed! Use A TBU! How Not To Do A Phone In.
Today, I've heard a station(which will remain anon) where the presenter interviewed a guest on the phone by putting the mic to the speakerphone. You could hear all of the other studio occupants rustling around and shifting in their seats, during this 15-minute chat. Then a baby, obviously in the studio, started crying and drowned out the phone guest! Tip- buy a phone interface! Or empty out the studio before you chat on a speakerphone!

What Not To Say In On Air Imaging
I heard this sweeper on a new radio station today. I have removed the station's name, because I don't want to embarrass them. It's not great copy. Why would you use an in-house radio term like 'rotation'? Why would a punter know what 5,000 songs means? Their IPOD might have more than that on it!(To radio programmers, it sounds like unfocussed madness!) When you write liners, use words and phrases that listeners understand. Talk like a real person. Try and use emotion. And sell the benefit. Why should I care? Why does playing all of those songs affect me, as...

Radioplayer In Sweden? Not Quite...
As heard on Vinyl FM, Stockholm- I thought it was an ad for the radio player but radioplayer.se is a shockingly ugly list of streams. Turns out (thanks to Matt Deegan who clearly speaks better Swedish) it's Bauer's Radio Play portal. Which looks much better!

Radio Pembrokeshire Launch Idents
Thanks to Drew White for sending me these. They were very cheap! We had no money at the start but they blooming well worked in aiding listen er recall. And that's what jingles should do, right? Recorded in Somerset and written by Mike Jones, who used to write jingles at DevonAir. Drew did the sarcastic edit to the 80s ident!

For me, this is the sound of France. This is the little jingle that plays before an SNCF train announcement. Much nicer than the bells we have in Britain.

The Least Effective Show Trail I Have Heard in Ages

Valleys At 1 - news bulletin
Valleys at 1. We had some complaints about the new news format with a bed that ran under the news. It sounded great. The second news jingle was produced by Tim James of Bespoke. We introduced it because whenever someone flushed the loo behind the news studio/studio2, you could hear it on air. This is the day that they announced the assembly location. Great reporting by Suzanne Chislett. Superb newsreading by Paul Osborne and Russ Stroud reads traffic!
