लेकिन इस तरह की गतिविधियों में पानी बर्बाद करना किसी भी मानक से ZLD नहीं है।
असली उद्देश्य संयंत्र में पुन: उपयोग के लिए पानी को फिट बनाना है।
स्मेल्टर या अयस्क लाभकारी प्रक्रिया, टेलिंग डैम, कूलिंग टॉवर या यहां तक कि RO अस्वीकार से अपशिष्ट जल बनें।
ऐसा केवल इसलिए नहीं हो रहा है क्योंकि मौजूदा ETP या STP जैसी प्रचलित तकनीकों में से कोई भी इस तरह की विशाल विविधता से निपटने या उन्हें शून्य स्तर तक ला कर बेअसर करने तथा पुन: उपयोग के लिए पानी के योग्य बनाने में सक्षम नहीं है।
