To find Spica, first locate the Big Dipper and draw an imaginary line following the curve in the Dipper’s handle until you come to the bright orange star we discussed last week– Arcturus. We call this the “arc to Arcturus.” Now we must drive a “spike to Spica.” If you continue following the arc, you should arrive at Spica which appears as a bright, blueish-white star in the constellation Virgo.

You’ll see the star cluster, made of 6 bright stars and one fainter star, located above the constellation Orion and the red planet Mars.
