My Talk with Shaine Greenwood
Earlier this month, I spoke to writer Shaine Greenwood about his recently-published sci-fi anthology, The Aether, but we discussed a number of other topics, including beta readers, Patreon and self-promotion, social media, and whether writers should also be readers. I explain why I think a villain is often the most important character in the story, and some qualities I believe a "good" villain needs. Do you like villains as much as I do? Tell me who your favorite literary villains are, and what qualities you think a "good" villain should have: Email: marisadellefarfalle@gmail.com Twitter: @marisadee13 Also, if you ra...

Real Places in Fictional Works? Why Not?
I just started rereading Stephen King's The Stand, & his Author's Note got me thinking about the role geographical locations have played in my work. I discuss whether I think one needs to have actually been to the places one writes about, and recommend resources that can help writers portray their real-life settings more accurately. I also explain where I think taking artistic license--which often includes making places up--is appropriate. Tell me the role place plays in your work! First Drafts--Garbage, or Good?
According to Ernest Hemingway, "The first draft of anything is garbage." Is it healthy for writers to adhere to this attitude in the early stages? I wasn't so sure...until I realized that I've felt fear while working on the first draft of my current project. Let me know what you think! Please leave me a voice message at Anchor, or email me at marisadellefarfalle@gmail.com. Also, you can follow me on Twitter: @marisadee13. The Role of Solitude in the Writing Life
A number of writers (including Virginia Woolf, Jessamyn West, and Paulo Coelho) have famously spoken about a writer's need for solitude, and have described writing as a solitary pursuit. Let me know what you think! Please leave me a voice message at Anchor, or email me at marisadellefarfalle@gmail.com. Also, I'd really appreciate it if you could take a m...

What does it mean to "write what you know"?
Many writers at all levels are familiar with Mark Twain's quote, "Write what you know" (https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/55868-write-what-you-know). But what does this mean, exactly? I use examples from my own writing to demonstrate how this advice might be helpful--and how it might limit us. I want to hear from you! Email me at marisadellefarfalle@gmail.com!
