#363: The Social Contract
We generally frown on ad hominem here at SVWAG, ensconced as we are in our glass houses. In the case of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (known affectionately as "Ja-Jay" by no one), though, who wrote extensively about proper methods of childhood education, we shall report that he confessed to rather callously sandbagging his lover into abandoning their children (Rousseau claimed there were five of them, though records are tricky). Way to be a douchebag, Jay-Jay.01:47 AYURIS: City of the Great Machine (German Tikhomirov, CrowD Games, 2023)Games Played Last Week:03:36...

"Observers brought attention to [Gritty's] appearance, which could be construed as frightening, while The Guardian described him as an "acid trip of a mascot." Response to Gritty's introduction was immediate and sharply mixed, with many fans on social media expressing bewilderment and some fright at his appearance. Public perception of Gritty became increasingly positive as Gritty's antics, which subverted the cuddly, family-friendly appearance and demeanor of other NHL mascots, gained more attention on social media."-WikipediaGames Played Last Week:00:56 -Can't Stop (Sid Sackson, Playte Games, 2023)04:01 -Tigris & Euphrates...

#356: Endgame Scoring
Tiebreakers are arguably a kind of endgame scoring. I respect the fact that they are invariably necessary (I mean, if for no other reason than if they're omitted some smartass like me will complain). That said, clearly if the scoreboard goes to 200+ I don't imagine we'll be hauling out the second tiebreaker condition all that much. Frequently the endgame conversion of resources to points already serves as a tiebreaker anyway. 01:48 AYURIS: Nidavellir (Serge Laget, GRRRE Games, 2020)Games Played Last Week:04:57 -FlickFleet (Jackson Pope & Paul Willcox, Eurydice Games, 2018)

He uncovers how recognizing mortality allows one to shed negative emotions, cherish every moment. and live a life of purpose and service. A stormy night, an important task to complete and an unquiet cadaver all come together in Memento Mori, a thrilling gothic tale and wonderful new addition to the catalogue of animated films that dip into the eerie and unsettling. Directed and co-written by Paul O’Flanagan of Boulder Media in Ireland, the film pays homage to classic stories told on stormy nights that keep you awake into the wee hours. In the show Ted Lasso (possibly the subject of a future Masterpiece Theatre?), French-Canadian goaltender Zoreaux asks to be called Van Damme. As employers, we gamers are a strange lot. We are expected to feed our workers, house them, give them their raw materials; we tell them where to go, when to work,a nd for how long; we subject them to fires, predation, starvation... and on top of all this, in some games we appear to confiscate all their wages! At least in Food Chain Magnate we occasionally allow them to go to the beach. Under strict supervision. Until we permit them the sweet release of death. I mean, until they "retire." Much art is discussed this week, from French Romantics, to pirate stuff, to conspiracist vision boards, to whatever Walker is doing when he uses clothespins on felt. Mark wonders whether he can justify leaving in dead air and calling it "bold use of negative space," but the deeper worry is that too many people would prefer the silence. Working tirelessly across the world from each other, they’ve finally released their lengthy debut album Prayer to the world. Birthday cake versus demographics: which will determine the future of British politics?
It was great to welcome back Professor Rob Ford for the latest episode of Never Mind The Bar Charts and to discuss with him both the long-term trends shaping British politics and how they may or may not be seen off by short term factors, such as a birthday cake. Which means we also got into how grim, or not, the future looks for the Conservative Party. Take a listen to find out what we concluded... #196: Going Off-Script
Some things, of course, from Josie and the Pussycats have aged poorly. The idea of "record stores" and CDs (that could, in turn sell out like they were PS5s or something) is downright quaint--especially given the format of this show. I'm pretty confident that the cultural moment of Moviefone Guy has well and truly passed, despite the continued use of both movies and phones. Do people still know who Carson Daly is? I confess I never really did. Mostly I know him from that totally jerkin' movie, Josie and the Pussycats.01:39 AYURIS: Watergate (Matthias Cramer, Capstone Games, 2019)

Ahead of her time in countless ways, Bettie Page was into fitness long before it became mainstream. Walker is a force of nature, a pent-up human-shaped mass of pure rage. The only outlet that can sate his furious destructive impulses is the ecstasy of the uninhibited flick--the catharsis of venting all of his power on a disc and then watching it careen around the board (then off the table, off someone's skull, off the floor, under the bookshelf, and then embedded in the drywall). He ten thunders with laughter, even as Huey informs him he missed his target and Dewey calls an ambulance. Is it a wonder, then, that Mark favours flicking games that encourage a modicum...

Armor Goes Clank!
AGC 159 December 12th 2011 (Good Night Everybody!) (1:10:16)
With Mark Kinney, Carol, and Mags. We're here, and have a topic! Updates, and the RPG Buffet calendar for 2012! iPhone, Android, and V20, and notes on notetaking. A new podcast (well, it was when we recorded): Law of the Geek! And other podcasts Mark has picked up. Wow, this took a while to release... DriveThruRPG Picks! Fabled Environment's Provincial Hotel review (and further discussion of using maps and the like in a game). Past Mark (looking for a past podcast mascot) kills Current Mark to introduce our Temporal Shenanigans topic for the night. Paradoxes? Immutable past? Alternate histories? PCs meeting...
