気づいたらすっかり秋めいてしまっていますね。あったかい部屋でゆっくり焼き芋でも食べながら緑茶をすすって読書でも・・と想像していると、そういえば雨の音を聞きながら本を読む時間も好きだったなぁなんて日本が少し恋しくなった金曜の板倉です、こんにちは。
「１％の情熱ものがたり」前回に引き続き、81人目のインタビュー。「変わった子供だったと思う。」5歳で母親を亡くし、生きる意味を考え探していた幼少期から思春期へ。一人で過ごしたクリスマスの日、振り返れば人生を大きく変えたトランペットとの出会いとその衝撃。そして転機となったグリーンカードの当選、Jazzの中心地ニューヨークでの生活が音楽家としての生き方を洗練させていったのでしょう。仲間やレジェンドたちと共に奏で揺らす音楽というストーリー、その美しさを垣間見る幸せがそこにはきっとあるはず。限られた時間の中での断片的な質問に対して、真摯に受け答えをしてくれる語り口調から大きな優しさと強さを感じました。深い眼差しで微笑みながら「これでいいのだ」と思えたら成功です、と生き方を諭してくれるようなRyoさんの情熱ものがたり。
中学2年生という多感な時期、一人で過ごすクリスマスの日にTVを見て出会ったWynton Marsalisのトランペット演奏。その時に受けた衝撃は、今もRyoさんの心の中に生き続けていると思うと本当に音楽そのものと人が人に与える影響や情熱の力ってすごいなぁって思い知らされます。

1976年、東京生まれ。千葉県東葛飾高等学校に入学と同時にトランペットを始める。1996年から2000年までアメリカ・ボストンのバークリー音楽院に在籍。タイガー大越、チャールズ・ルイス、ダレン・バレットに師事し、ジャズパフォーマンス科を優秀な成績で卒業。2000年に日本に帰国し、各地のジャズクラブで演奏やレッスンを行う。2006年にアメリカ永住権を取得し、活動の拠点をニューヨークに移す。以来、The Blue Note、Dizzy’s Club, The Birdland、B B King’s, The Cotton Club, Smalls, Mezzrowなどで演奏。共演者には、Bill Crow, Charlie Persip, Ed Cherry, Billy Kaye, Dennis Davis,Tadataka Unno, Joe Cohn, Ron MacClure, Montez Coleman, Amina Figarova, Fukushi Tainaka, Toru Dodo, Michael Kanan, Grant Stewart, Jon De Martino, Greg Bandy, Neal Miner, Ron Affif 等多数。2015年には読売テレビ「ぐっと地球便」でニューヨークでの生活が取り上げられ、好評を博す。現在はビル・クロウ、スティーブ・リトル、スティーブ・アッシュからなる自身のバンドで、毎週日曜日にSmallsのハウスバンドを務め、ニューヨークのジャズシーンにおいて欠かせない存在となっている。リーダー作には「Ryo’s Trio」「Joy Spring」「Pure Imagination」、ビル・クロウを含むトリオ「Two for The Road」「Here & Now」がある。近年は教育にも力を入れており、YouTubeの自身のチャンネルで定期的にレッスンビデオを公開し、高評価を得ている。
