The Twelve - Part 2: You Picked Them?, Pastor Matt Dyck
2025-03-16: Jesus spent his ministry years intentionally shaping twelve individuals who would lead the way when he left. These guys were very different, yet their goal was the same: follow Jesus and be like Jesus. This concept is known as "discipleship". But the implication of being a disciple was unique for each of them, and it also has unique implications for each of us. In this series, we are looking at one of the twelve each week and considering what it meant for them and what it means for us today to be a disciple of Jesus. This week...

Should Congress Grant the NCAA an Antitrust Exemption?
Since the Supreme Court’s 2021 decision in NCAA v. Alston paved the way for universities to pay student-athletes, college sports have changed dramatically. Now, the NCAA is asking for an antitrust exemption to help navigate these changes. The NCAA is surely facing a complex set of challenges, but an antitrust exemption is a big ask. This raises the question: Is an antitrust exemption a reasonable response to the current challenges facing college sports, a uniquely American institution?Val Ackerman is the commissioner of the Big East Conference. Previously, she was the founding president of the WN...

The Fine Art of Reconciliation | Ken Dyck | August 18, 2024
Unresolved conflict takes up a tremendous amount of mental and emotional energy. Our culture often advises us that in conflict situations, it is best to dissolve the relationship. This is a temporary solution at best that leaves us with emotional wreckage. In Matthew 5, Jesus makes it clear that being reconciled with the people around us is vitally important in our walk with Him. Luke 19 describes an encounter between Jesus and Zacchaeus. Because of his meeting with the Lord, and as a result of the interest and concern Jesus had for him, Zacchaeus committed to making things right...

Generosity 1: Lies about Generosity - Genesis 12:1-3
I was raised in a home that modeled generosity. My mother had no income but developed a massive garden to be generous. My father was known for his generosity to neighbors and he gave faithfully financially to the Church, whether or not the farm made money. My father forgave a $50,000 debt I owed him to cover a down payment on a house. I was able to work off $5-7k of it, but we were raising 4 kids in an expensive city. He saw it wasn't gonna happen and said, "Just forget it." When I visited my parents, our vehicle...

Keeping it Real 10: Sticking with it to the end - James 5:7-12
What was probably Winston Churchill's shortest speech went like this: "Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never in nothing, great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never give in." And with that, he sat down. William Carey, the pioneer missionary to the modern missionary movement in the 17th century, said of his biographer, "If he gives me credit for being a plodder, he will describe me justly. Anything beyond that will be too much. I can plod, I can persevere in any definite pursuit. To this...

Whispers in the Waiting Room - Matthew 24:1-14
We find ourselves sometimes in waiting rooms. What's interesting about the waiting room is that nobody is in a waiting room any longer than they have to be. Toronto General Hospital has a very nice waiting room, nice coaches, nice reading material. But nobody is in that waiting room one minute longer than they have to be. Nobody comes in from the streets and just sits there and reads the good magazines. I find the same in my dentist's office. I find the same at my mechanic. Nobody comes to a waiting room just to hang out. We find...

Living Faithfully Amid Spiritual Decline 7: Things Only God Can Fix - 2 Kings 6:1-7
There are certain qualities that are unique to God. No human possesses them. One is that he's present everywhere, all the time. That can never be said of anyone. He knows everything. That can never be said about anyone either. His power knows no limit. It's unique to God. He's eternal. He gives us eternity, but we have a definite beginning. He never had beginning. There are qualities that are unique to Him. There's many things that only He can do. And today I want to talk about things that only God can fix. We're a bit down the...

Living Faithfully Amid Spiritual Decline 3: More than Enough - 2 Kings 4:1-7
I called today's message "More than enough," focussing on how it is that God provides. He does that quite practically for what we at TAC do here in living in a city where things are more expensive all the time. The Bible says, "My God will supply all your needs according to his riches and glory." Jesus teaches us to pray, "give us today our daily bread". We know God means to provide for us and instructs us to come to Him with dependence on matters of very practical need. We come and live dependent upon him and he...

The Bottom Line that Really Matters 6 - Why I Believe in Divine Healing - Matthew 8:14-17
Seems like nothing brings a person into sadness and despair like illness. There could be other things, but it ranks right there in the top. A person could be going on just fine and dandy. Everything's just going the way we always dream and hope until a doctor gives some really bad news and our future suddenly becomes uncertain. But nothing renews hope like the possibility of a cure. And if they have the resources, they'll travel to great lengths on planet earth in search of a cure, just even the faintest hope of a cure. But Jesus heals...

Making the most of your spiritual gifts 4 - Why we should earnestly desire spiritual gifts - Matthew 10:5-15
We have a lot of desires. In 1 Corinthians, the apostle Paul writes, "Earnestly desire spiritual gifts". Is this desire on our radar? Is this something that we hold in our hearts? How we feel about spiritual gifts can be all over the map. We might not stand in the way but we might not seek them either. Another response is, why bother with what can be the source of such division in the church? Then there are those who really do love the gifts, and desire that they'd be given more. What's interesting is that same passage is written...

Why God Does (and Doesn't) Heal - Matthew 15:29-31
I was thinking, if you want to really bring hope to a person, start talking about divine healing and pray for them, so that even a measure of the burden of illness or affliction or heaviness is lifted and light comes to the eyes. It is the afflictions that come to our bodies or to our minds that weigh us down so much, and has all through human history. So when Jesus comes and is known as one who heals sicknesses, crowds just gather, they just come from all over the place. And even in our day where there's...

Drawing from the parable of the talents found in Matthew 25, Melanie points out 10 lies we are prone to believe which prevent us from using our gifts. FIRST STORIES - Tales from Turtle Island
Dennis Allen - Inupiat/Gwich’in
It's hard to peg Dennis Allen as exclusively a filmmaker, or a musician, or a writer. Rather, Dennis weaves between all three with ease and comfort. From a long line of traditional Inuit story-tellers, Dennis took this ancient folk art of storytelling and shape-shifted it into award winning films, poignant songs, and dramatic writing. Winner of the Alanis Obomsawin Best Documentary Award; The Sally Manning Award for Non-Fiction Writing, and an Honorable Mention from the American Songwriter's Competition, Dennis is a talented artist and gifted storyteller. Lower The Bar: How Lowering My Expectations Has Lead To Greater Results
So yesterday I spoke about my current routine. One thing that I've implemented to stay the course is an idea I call: Acceptable Minimum Activity. Basically, what is the least I can do an activity and still feel as if I accomplished something. You may think this a strange way to be productive, but basically I imagine the busiest day I could, or a day I feel I have absolutely no energy. On that day what could I accomplish in a number of areas of my life, because if I could do it that day, I could do it...

Routine: How I'm Staying Productive During Lockdown
Last Spring when it seemed the whole world shut down I wasn't nearly as productive as I would've liked. I had a ton of ideas of what I could do, had the time to do them but after a week of working extremely hard I burnt out. Learning from that, I was a little more prepared for this shutdown. After a few days of figuring it out I've settled into a routine I've been able to keep for a few weeks now.

Fake it till you make it is BS: How I actually gained confidence
I have repeatedly spoken about my love of cliches in these journal entries. I tried to think of one that I didn't agree with and this was the result. As someone who grew up with self confidence issues, I tried my best to act confident. This combined with a proclivity to want to please people lead me to being in a much worse position. I finally started to gain confidence by actually doing/accomplishing things. Although I still have moments of doubt, I generally carry myself with a confidence I was never sure I'd possess.

Value: How I Make Decisions Regarding Time and Money
I spoke about accountability yesterday. That is an external motivator. Today I speak about value, an internal source of motivation. We as humans place are value in things, and whether conscious or not we act based on these values. Few years ago I went through the process of actually writing out things that I value and prioritized them. By doing this, I now have a framework, a filter of sorts, to help make decisions. Let me know what you think of this.

Believe it or not, I am someone who isn't naturally productive. If left to my own devices I tend to be quite lazy actually. Be Heroic: Living a Life Worth Documenting
Recently I have become captivated by "The Hero's Journey". I'm started to watch films and read books of people, both fictional and real life examples of people who embody that. Doing this reminded me of a concept Gary Vaynerchuk expressed years ago. Document, don't create. I have experimented with that in the past, resulting in one of the more fulfilling periods of my life. I fell off the wagon, but I'm back. I am striving to live a life that is worth documenting, to become as heroic as I can be.
