Rickster's Cafe Con Funk (A Tribute to Ricky Powell)
This show is dedicated to my old friend Ricky Powell who passed away Feb. 1st 2021. Ricky is a legendary photographer who captured so many rising stars during hip hop's golden age. Specifically and perhaps his most iconic photographs are of the Beastie Boys and Run-DMC during their 1987 tour together. He has published a number of books featuring his photography, most notably and my personal favorite is "Public Access - Ricky Powell Photography 1985-2005" I had the pleasure of meeting Ricky in 1997 and over the years we shared many good times. He was always quick with a joke...

Satisfy Your Mind
A few of the selections here may not be categorically defined as "psychedelic" but what is psychedelic music? How do you define it? Do you need to take drugs to listen to it? Chains and Black Exhaust
"Chains and Black Exhaust" is probably the best funk rock compilation of all time. Released in 2002 without a track list or any artist credits and boasting only a picture of an old biker bar in Chicago, it quickly became a topic of curiosity and was immediately sought after by collectors and dj's alike. It was compiled by the crew at Memphix Records, who dug deep into the 45 vault and came up with some really heavy funk rock grooves from the 1970's Black Rock music scene. And it's full of enough reverb and fuzztone to make your head spin. Enjoy!

This episode features The Amazing Spider-Man starring in a rock and roll comic adventure! In 1972, Ron Dante recorded this album for Buddha records entitled 'Spiderman: A Rockomic', offering up infectious tunes like 'Goin' Crosstown' interspersed within a storyline. The album music was released under the name The Webspinners, and although those recordings are superb, they sound dated today. So I thought I'd play around with some music I think goes well with this story and interspersed snippets of dialogue from the original recording of Spider Man throughout for a more contemporary and funkier experience. I Love 90's Hip Hop
This episode pays homage to what many refer to as the "Golden Age" of Hip Hop. During the 90's Hip Hop's increasingly innovative and diverse styles literally shaped the entire musical landscape of the time. It was a period when Hip Hop artists seemed to reinvent the genre with each new record or single they put out. The production became denser, the rhymes and beats were elevated to higher levels and the drum machine was augmented with sampling technology which gave rise to a whole new breed of dj's and producers. The amount of groundbreaking tracks released during this...

(track...

They decided not to use any digital programming and instead relied on old fashioned analog recording methods, including good old studio acoustics, which thus created the very distinctive sound of Daptone Records.
