Live Premiere of Le Dernier Chant d'Ophélie by Mathieu Lussier
Live concert at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, premiere performance of Le Dernier Chant d'Ophélie by Mathieu Lussier, conducted by Alain Trudel with Toronto Chamber Orchestra. I also played the Jolivet Concerto on this program, premiered Carnets de Voyages by Alain Trudel for trumpet, bassoon and orchestra and played the Shostakovitch Fast Dance in the version for trumpet, bassoon and orchestra. I remember I was wearing high heeled Fluvog boots that were killing my feet by the end of the show, but it was a great night. Mozart Concerto K191 with Nadina Mackie(age 22)& the Curtis Symphony Orchestra - 1981
My first performance of the Mozart concerto with orchestra in May, 1981, age 22, with the Curtis Symphony, Carmit Zori, concertmaster, conducted by William Smith just before I joined the Montreal Symphony. I was playing my 10,000 series Heckel with with slightly faster vibrato than I use now! Cadenzas by Bernard Garfield who came to the concert that night. Concert recorded by my father on his Nagra (which explains why all the applause is recorded!); my parents had driven 3000 miles from northern BC to hear this performance, then they drove back again.

Christopher Millard (age 21) and Nadina Mackie (age 17) playing Couperin Suite for 2 Like Instruments in 1976... I had been studying bassoon for just under 2 years with Christopher and heading to Curtis Institute the next year. I was playing a Cooper/Puchner and Christopher had a Heckel. The first of so many performances together. There are two versions on this upload... a lot of tape hiss on the first but a clear tone; less tape noise on the second but vaguer bassoon pickup.

Lesson with Sol Schoenbach, 1980 (Nadina Mackie, bassoon & Graydon Goldsby, piano)
This is a recording of part of one of my lessons with Sol Schoenbach in Fall 1980 at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia while I was in my final year, just a few months before joining the Montreal Symphony. I LOVE hearing Sol's beloved voice again. The background clunking sound is the cassette machine. The first half is my lesson; the second half (starting with the frère jacques reed test) is another well-known bassoonist who was in his first year at Curtis in 1980/81.
