The Nantucket Gam
The Tragedy of the Essex - Part 2 with Nathaniel Philbrick
In 1820, the Nantucket whaleship Essex set sail on what was meant to be a routine whaling voyage to the Pacific. Instead, it became one of history's most harrowing survival stories - and the real-life inspiration for Moby-Dick. In Part 2 of our special two part episode "The Tragedy of the Essex", we sit down with author and historian Nathaniel Philbrick, eight time New York Times bestseller and winner of the 2000 National Book Award for his iconic nonfiction book In the Heart of the Sea. We explore the connections between the story of the Essex and the Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, discuss the l...

The American Exploring Expedition That Changed How We See the World
Six ships and 346 men led by Lt. Charles Wilkes embarked on a four-year expedition that would change the way we see the world. From geographic, zoologic and ethnographic discoveries, the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842 provided so much information that it was enough to establish the core of nearly every collection in every scientific department in the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of Natural History. Episode 11: Colonial Chaos
In this episode we reach the end of the era. In 1675 and 1676, two major wars overtook nearly all of the English colonies. In Virginia, Nathaniel Bacon created chaos in order to attack nearby Native tribes. What started out as a personal grievance became a full blown rebellion that outlived the origianal leader. In New England, Metacom, also known as Philip, started forging alliances with the surrounding Native tribes to try to put an end to the English menace. This conflict outgrew the original leader as well and led to the bloodiest war on American soil. After these colonial wars...

Thanksgiving Special: Historian Nathaniel Philbrick’s “Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community and War”
Author of more than a dozen books, historian Nathaniel Philbrick’s “Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community and War” details the perilous ocean crossing the European pilgrims made. Imagine the struggle of moving 2 mph for 3,000 miles over two months. Yes, the Native American Wampanoags shared bounty with the Pilgrims at that first tense Thanksgiving, but unlike what many of us learned in grade school, it was an overwhelmingly Native affair. As for the menu, probably yes to turkeys, ducks and venison but no to cranberry sauce and pumpkin pies. The author describes these and many other new facts about th...

A conversation with Nathaniel Philbrick about his new book IN THE HURRICANE’S EYE. The book chronicles the remarkable year leading up to the siege of Yorktown, the battle that ultimately broke a years-long stalemate with the British and earned America her freedom. A narrative filled with historically misunderstood naval engagements such as the Battle of the Chesapeake, which was fought without a single American soldier, and unsung heroes lost to history like Spain’s Francisco Saavedra, who provided the French with both money and ships, IN THE HURRICANE’S EYE also highlights Washington’s underappreciated naval cunning and his fraught...

#223: Valiant Ambition in the American Revolution
In the American Revolution, two figures stand in stark contrast to each other: George Washington and Benedict Arnold. What few Americans know is at the start of the War of Independence, Washington was a blundering general, while Arnold was one of the colonies’ very best. How is it that Washington transformed himself into one of America's greatest leaders while Arnold ended up betraying his countrymen? That’s what my guest today, Nathaniel Philbrick, explores in his book "Valiant Ambition: George Washington, Benedict Arnold, and the Fate of the American Revolution."
