Are plug-in hybrids just as polluting as petrol cars?
There is research from Brussels think tank Transport & Environment suggesting that plug-in hybrids are just as polluting as petrol cars. Neil Briscoe is a motoring expert and writes extensively on this for The Irish Times. And given his knowledge of motoring and our transition to EVs, were the findings a surprise to him? In the second part of the podcast, host Ciarán Hancock speaks to Cliff Taylor of The Irish Times about an upgrade to Irish growth forecasts by stockbroker Goodbody and some research from Ibec on hybrid working, suggesting that employees a...

What damage is Elon Musk doing to Tesla’s shares and sales?
In the first part of this week’s episode of Inside Business, we look at Tesla and the backlash against the vehicle car maker this year because of Elon Musk’s association with Donald Trump.Sales in Europe have slumped while its share price has shed 24 per cent of its value year to date. That amounts to about $800 billion of market value being wiped out.In addition, there have been many protests and reports of Tesla’s being vandalised. To add to the mix, Chinese rivals have also upped their game.

Musicians vs the World
Stuart Hancock: The Music of Kensuke's Kingdom
The score for the BAFTA and Annie-nominated film, Kensuke’s Kingdom, is big, traditional, and symphonic. Directors Neil Boyle and Kirk Hendry initially conceived the project almost as a silent movie, as there is very little dialogue between the two lead characters, who do not speak each other’s language. The music plays a pivotal role in the story-telling, featuring a 60-piece orchestra and a 35-piece choir. Stuart handled every aspect of the music production – composition, orchestration, music editing, supervision of the mix, handling the budget, etc. He joins us to discuss the highs and lows of this massive project: from t...

Could a glut of affordable EVs tempt Irish motorists to make the switch?
Figures for 2024 showed a 1 per cent decline in total car sales across the Irish market versus 2023. But the number of electric vehicles sold reduced by almost 24 per cent with just 17,459 registered. This is against the backdrop of a government target to have one million EVs on Irish roads by 2030 as we phase out the use of fossil fuels.Neil Briscoe writes extensively about motoring for the Irish Times and he joined host Ciarán Hancock on the line to go through some of the affordable options for those looking to buy, and explain why sales of E...

What to consider when switching to an EV
The high price of electric cars has long been seen as a barrier for those looking to switch from the traditional combustion-engine car to an EV, but that is now changing with many car makers slashing their prices. This advice completely changed how Neil approached projects and tasks. The conversation also touches on the concept of working fewer hours for better results, the importance of specificity in communication, and the value of understanding the core purpose of your work. We didn't have a specific theme in mind for the show so we ended up talking about recent viewings and let the conversation take us where it will. The two major films we discussed were Robert Eggers' The Northman and Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley - we had mixed feeling about both. More on the art-house side was Zero F...
