Pain as Portal to Joy: Reading Mary's Magnificat with Nikki Giovanni | The Poetry of Advent
In this compelling meditation on joy during difficult times, elder Shae Washington weaves together Nikki Giovanni's radical poetry with Mary's subversive Magnificat. Through fresh interpretations of these revolutionary texts, Washington explores how marginalized voices throughout history have claimed joy as an act of resistance. Drawing on personal stories, historical context, and contemporary struggles, she challenges us to see joy not as an emotion dependent on circumstances, but as a posture of hope and defiance in the face of empire. Part of The Table Church's "Poetry of Advent" series examining sacred and secular poetry as spiritual practice. Timestamps: 0:00...

The delightful Nikki Giovanni died on Dec. 9. It is a joy and a solace to relisten to this beloved conversation she had with Krista in 2016 – to experience her signature mix of high seriousness, sweeping perspective, and insistent pleasure. Her words and her spirit feel, if anything, more necessary now. In the 1960s, she was a poet of the Black Arts Movement that nourished civil rights. She became a professor at Virginia Tech, where she called forth beauty and courage after the 2007 shooting there — a precursor to violence that has become all too familiar in American life in the intervening years...

In the back of the library, Spring of 1997 to be precise, I crashed full stop into a solid anchor. Nikki Giovanni - the first poet I ever loved. She metered me to Jones beach, lyric-ed me in lilacs, taught me that poetry did not have to rhyme. It was savage, and primal, and beautiful… a way to put your insides on the outside. The Two Twelve
Fake it for Me. (212 w. Nikki Giovanni & James Baldwin)
In this episode of TheTwoTwelve, I used a 3 minute clip from a 2 hour interview named “The Black Detour” between Nikki Giovanni and James Baldwin. In this clip, Nikki Giovanni is asking, why is it because I love you, I get the bulk of your anger? If you can hypothetically “lie” to your friends, or your employer for the perception that everything is okay out of obligation, why can’t you also lie to me sometimes just for the balance of our relationship? This became a conversation about mental health vs. obligation. Obligation to your family, Obligation to your friends, and your oblig...

MAKE ME RAIN by Nikki Giovanni, read by Nikki Giovanni
Nikki Giovanni’s slightly raspy, slightly sibilant voice draws listeners into this important collection of poetry and prose. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile’s Emily Connelly discuss Giovanni’s skill at wringing out all the humor, anger, and sorrow in her poetry. Warm tones express themes of quilts and songs and love, and her poet’s sense guides her tempo as she explores her perspectives on being Black in America. Her palpable anger recalls the death of Michael Brown in “Ferguson: the Musical,” and her heart seems to be breaking as she describes “the brother” getting up in the dark to drive to the...
