Marie-Juliette Olga Boulanger wird am 18. August 1893 in Paris geboren. Ihr Rufname wird „Lili“. Lilis Vater Ernest ist Dirigent, Komponist, Sänger und Professor am Konservatorium. Ihre Mutter Raïssa ist ebenfalls Sängerin und auch ihre 6 Jahre ältere Schwester Nadia hat sich ganz der Musik verschrieben.
Weil Lili sich von einer Lungenentzündung in ihrer Kindheit nie wieder ganz erholt, wird ihr regelmäßiger Schulbesuch unmöglich. Sie stellt sich selbst einen autodidaktischen Lehrplan zusammen.
