Dispelling the False Claims about MAPS and MDMA-Assisted Therapy
In this episode, Dr. Dave Rabin MD, PhD is joined by Dr. Geoff Bathje PhD who authored an article published on July 19, 2024 in Chacruna entitled: “The Unbelievable Claims of Psymposia about MAPS and MDMA-Assisted Therapy.”Dr. Bathje and Dr. Rabin discuss the recent FDA Advisory Committee vote on MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD, which surprisingly and wrongfully concluded that the benefits do not outweigh the risks. This conversation deep dives into Dr. Bathje’s report on how Psymposia, what appears to be a group of fringe radicals, negatively biased the FDA committee's vote on June 4 by writing letters with false and mi...

173: Psychedelic Capitalism (w/Psymposia)
The market for psychedelics is projected to grow from $2 billion in 2020 to $10.75 billion by 2027—a growth rate that could outpace the legal US cannabis market. Many high-profile investors and celebrities are entering the space, often under the pretense of funding breakthrough mental health interventions. But…is that the real concern? Microdosing to help depression, anxiety, addiction, or suicidal ideation are all laudable goals. But is that what’s really happening in the psychedelics space?Derek is joined by Psymposia co-founder, editor, and producer, Brian Normand; medicine, society, and culture research fellow, Neşe Devenot, PhD; and man...

My Scarlet Letter: Living with the Aftermath of Psymposia's Unethical Journalistic Abuse
Approximately 2.5 years ago, completely out of the blue, Psymposia came along and weaponized a then-five-year-old video of one of my public talks and through blatant distortion and radical decontextualization, launched an abusive campaign against me. Despite engaging in clearly unethical journalism, Psymposia's labeling of me as an "abuser" has been widely accepted, promoted, and complacently repeated throughout much of the psychedelic world. Their smear campaign has been very successful in getting me "cancelled," with a few notable exceptions. Because I'm continually coming up against the wall of exclusion that Psymposia created, I'm revisiting the issue here on the only...

#58: MAPS Psychedelic Science Contract Muzzles Speakers
On June 6, Psymposia reported on the presenter contract for MAPS' Psychedelic Science 2023. The contract includes clauses that limit when and where presenters can speak, and a "MAPS Reputation" clause that warns speakers to not "tarnish" the organization's "reputation and goodwill." After our reporting, MAPS announced that all presenters would be released from the radius clause of the contract. Concerns with the “MAPS reputation” clause were not acknowledged. #287 | Pharmacological Dystopia: A Critique Of The Commodification Of Psychedelics w/ David Nickles
[Intro: 11:50]David Nickles — Managing Editor of Psymposia, underground researcher, and harm reduction advocate — joins me to discuss the ongoing commodification, medicalization, and corporatization of psychedelics and the intersections between the far right, conspirituality, and psychedelia. Psychedelics have gone mainstream. With major corporate interests now pushing for the legalization and commodification of psychedelic compounds in the US and abroad, David, along with his colleagues at Psymposia, have been critiquing the various claims these well-funded groups have been making in their effort to profit off the normalization and broader public acceptance of these controlled substances. Mike Margolies - Sharing our Psychedelic Stories
We speak to Mike Margolies from Psymposia, an events group and digital magazine focused on psychedelics and drug policy reform. Mike talks about how Psymposia organises a platform for people to talk about their psychedelic experiences, and issues within the psychedelic community. We discuss the privilege still inherent in psychedelic culture when it comes to drug use and criminalisation, and what we can do to become a more diverse community.
