Richard Swinburne (b.1934)
In the quietude of our minds, we embark on a serene journey through the profound depths of philosophical theology, exploring Richard Swinburnes pioneering trilogy that seeks to articulate the existence of God with analytic precision. RA050: THIS is Why God Hides? (Part 8 of the Divine Hiddenness Series)
The Hiddenness Series returns. Richard Swinburne's responsibility argument aims to show it's good for God to stay hidden. That way we can investigate God's existence together. Assisting others in this endeavor, says Swinburne, is a very good deed—one we should be thankful to have the opportunity to do. In this video I discuss Swinburne's argument, Schellenberg's response, and Travis Dumsday's reformulation. I then share some of my own objections to the responsibility argument. Most importantly, I explain how it fails to undercut Schellenberg's hiddenness argument.

In a thought-provoking recent episode released before this Easter, analytic theologian Dr. R.T. The one he focuses the most on in the idea that God would be obligated to become incarnate so that he can suffer along with us, his beloved creatures. Episode 61 – Show NotesOccam’s Razor shows us how simple explanations are superior to complex ones and so simplicity is a concept that might lead us to believe in God as this one simple concept – a supernatural personal agent – can explain all the complexities of the world. We try to assess this line of thinking, especially using the work of the Oxford Christian philosopher Richard Swinburne who favours the approach. This then leads into the doctrine of Divine Simplicity which was prominent in the Medieval church (eg Aquinas). Of course Andrew brings us down to earth with what the Bible sa...

The existence of God is the most discussed, and perhaps the most important, question in philosophy. For the majority of the world's population, God provides meaning, morality, metaphysics, and hopefully, salvation. A rich history of scholarship defending God's existence has meant theism has long been considered to be a reasonable worldview; however, with the rise of secularism and the new atheist movement, a fiery and passionate debate has ensued: one of science vs. religion. Our question: can the two be reconciled? In this episode, we'll be discussing God's existence with one of contemporary philosophy's most...

Joining the INXS family in Northern Queensland as that pasty, vitamin D-deprived emerging auteur in early 1984, he would go on to be an intrinsic and artistic tour-de-force shaping INXS’ ascent from hard-working, freshmen musicians to globe-trotting superstars. podcast 331 – Dr. Joshua Sijuwade on the metaphysics of monarchical trinitarianism
At one point, influenced by the great Christian philosopher Richard Swinburne, Dr. Joshua Sijuwade held to a “social” Trinty. But now, following Beau Branson, he holds to a “monarchical trinitarian” view on which the one God just is the Father, and also there is a divine Son and a divine Spirit. But he’s continued to think about the issues, now influenced by some work by Timothy Pawl and by metaphysician E.J. Lowe. In some ways, he’s trying to bring together a Swinburnean view of “the Trinity” with a Bransonian one, as we saw in episode 330.

Notoriously, Dr. William Lane Craig compares the Trinity to the mythical three-headed dog Cerberus from Greek mythology – shown here as Hercules is about to club him. (Or: club them?) But that analogy is not really the heart of his model of the Trinity, which he calls “Trinity monotheism.” On this theory, God is one “soul” which somehow supports three “centers of consciousness” by having three sets of mental and volitional faculties. This is called “Trinity monotheism” because on this theology, only the Trinity is divine in the way the one God is divine – none of the “Persons” is. Ea...

Professor Swinburne is famous for his many books which carefully develop and defend Christian claims. In this talk given to the Evangelical Philosophical Society in March of 2018, he gives his latest thoughts on the Trinity. Swinburne’s is usually called a “social” Trinity theory, what I call a “three self” theory. For him, the “Persons” of the Trinity are so many selves, three conscious, intelligent, intentionally acting beings (individual entities, substances), capable of love and cooperation. Is this a distinctively eastern or “Greek” theory, as opposed to western or “Latin” Trinity theories? Swinburne denies that it is, sketching his u...

rd104 Religious Experience with guest Tanya Luhrmann
For many religious believers the most compelling evidence for theism is their own personal experience of God's presence. Christians in the rapidly growing charismatic "renewalist" movement do not just talk to God. They claim to actually hear God talking back. Are these powerful religious experiences evidence that God really exists or are they the result of mental illness? Anthropologist Tanya Luhrmann, author of When God Talks Back, offers another explanation: such experiences arise naturally when spiritual communities learn to train and enhance their natural capacity for imagination. She joins us on the show to talk about what she observed while...

The Concept of God
More at https://www.philosophytalk.org/shows/concept-god. What does "God" mean? Is God a concrete thing like a chair or a human; or is it an abstract thing, like love or goodness? Is there something that all concepts of God have in common, some feature that all cultures attribute to God?
