Paterson / The Door
Rolling in, top up, under, thrust and recoil, a great clatter; lifted as air, boated, multicolored, a wash of seas — from mathematics to particulars — divided as the dew, floating mists, to be rained down and regathered into a river that flows and encircles: shells and animalcules generally and so to man, to Paterson. Suzanne has been enjoying Paterson, Paterson, Paterson! Paterson is a book-length poem by William Carlos Williams (you know, the guy who wrote the one about the red wheelbarrow and the one about the plums in the icebox). Paterson is a classic photo essay by George A. Tice. Paterson is also a film inspired by the...

On today’s show I discuss my favorite books I read in 2024 and share my most anticipated books of 2025, plus some popular authors coming out with new books this year. A few statistics first. In 2024: I read 67 books. I did not finish (DNF) 16 books. 67% of my books were fiction, with 33% nonfiction. All but one book was for adults; I read one young adult book. I read 21 debuts, or first-time-published authors, which was about 31% of all my books. All my books were physical books. I don’t use an e-reader or listen to audiobooks. Mystery/thriller was my most read...

#195: Infusing My Core Self Back into My Business
On today’s show, I talk about how hiring a business coach for a few months helped me get excited about my business again. Here’s what I share with you in this episode: Why I hired a coach. The initial goals I had with coaching and how that changed. How outlining who my “core self” was helped me with my business direction. Insights that my coach had that helped me. Sonia Delaunay observed the sinuous movements of the interlocked dancers, as seen in the painting Bal Bullier, while wearing her Simultaneous Dress, which consisted of multicolored fragments of fabric, extending her colorful forms from painting to life. "The Prose of the Trans-Siberian and of Little Jehanne of France,” 1913
Ron Padgett reads excerpts from Blaise Cendrars’s poem “The Prose of the Trans-Siberian and of Little Jehanne of France,” 1913. A collaboration between Sonia Delaunay and Cendrars, the “first simultaneous book” features her painting running down the left side, inspired by this poem, set in multicolored type on the right. Cendrars’s montaged verse recounts a young man’s impressions on the Trans-Siberian Railway, and with the accordioned panels mimicking a folding train schedule, the work achieves a collapse of time and space emblematic of the experience of modern life. It has now been 20 years since September 11th, 2001. So we’re bringing you a Peabody Award-winning story from our archives about one sentence, written in the hours after the attacks, that has led to the longest war in U.S. history. We examine how just 60 words of legal language have blurred the line between war and peace. In the hours after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, a lawyer sat down in front of a computer and started writing a legal justification for taking action against those responsible. The language that he drafted and that President George W. Bush si...

15. Quarantine IV - Red Shift
Four weeks into our collective Great Pause, the Bafflers examine “Red Shift,” Ted Berrigan’s iconic New York School poem. This close reading – distinguished in part by our own Sparrow having been Berrigan’s student - proceeds from the astrophysical definition of “redshift” to speculations into what attributive meanings to which Berrigan might allude. This includes a broad look into the nature of time as surfaced in the poem and in part depth charged in Berrigan situating the poem “at 8:08 p.m.” (the Eight-Fold Path, I-Ching and Hubble’s insights into an exploding universe). We touch on his forebearers – Allen Ginsberg, Frank O’Hara...

Don't make your goals impossible | Leadership & Coaching
Late last week I caught a link in one of my favorite newsletters ( 10 Things by Luke Leighfield ) to a poem titled "How to Be Perfect" by Ron Padgett. There was one particular line that really stuck with me, I'm still thinking about it today. "Imagine what you would like to see happen, and then don't do anything to make it impossible." This made me think of another line I'm fond of sharing, "Every time you say yes to something, you're saying no to something else."

La Grande Illusion: The cultural impact of World War I in France
Much of the Western Front fighting in World War I took place in France, yet the cultural legacy of the war in France remains under-explored in the UK. This week, Juliet talks to Eric Robertson (Royal Holloway) and Peter Read (University of Kent) about how the experience of the war affected the Cubist and Surrealist movements and the development of French film, pushing some artists towards traditionalism, and others towards the avant-garde. If You Don't Break Your Ropes While You're Alive(do you think the ghosts will do it after?)
when I am dead, it won't matter how hard you press your ear to the ground no one knows our name until our last breath has gone out the old dog bends his head listening I guess the sound of the earthworms get to him we look to the end of the tale and find black marigolds and silence and if you don't break your ropes while you're alive, do y'think the ghosts will do it after? I think of you walking along a headland of green oats in June so full of repose, so rich with life I see...

Hazelwood
I went out to the hazelwood because a fire was in my head light was the wood, light and green and what I saw, I had not seen the bark of the tree a place where a fire had been the prickly water lily the chestnut and the burr a man with thick hair who washes it and dries it bare the little monkey looks at me he wants to tell me something that he has forgotten stone flowers, diamond fire and incandescent fruit the dog barked talking to the stars the rattlesnake coughed up my scars I saw the...

Happiness Is A Hologram

Ocean
time to start concentrating on which way I would turn after I locked the front door, what shop signs I would see, what bridges I would lean on to watch the broad river undulating, like a long-playing record under the needle of my eye. time to stand dripping wet and wonder about the hoards of people I would pass in the street, mostly people whose existence I did not believe in, but a few whom I would glance at and see my whole life the way you see the ocean. (Billy Collins) I have a feeling that my boat has...

Frail Engines of Love
It was a lady 'companied by goat men Her hair held up the earth her eyes were dark then Wandering and loneliness through switchbacks and history These frail engines of love bound to a mystery where are you now? I'm falling down You've led me to a field Under a widening sky From time to time the mind runs out of steam lacking in energy, These frail engines of love bound to a mystery unexplained in the meadow lay the dead bird the wind fluttered its wings mountains are just mountains the rain dismantles every night the great wink of...

The Streets Remember They Once Were Fields
the fog flows into the house through the steep and narrow driveway the endless night, it is now nothing more than a sweet decay hoping to be astonished tomorrow by what I do not know my eyes will burst when hit by the blades of the coming sun the radio blares from the corner store the streets remember they once were fields the radio blares from the corner store the streets remember they once were fields gone are disorderly avenues of eucalyptus and beaten paths it is the dream I sometimes forget the endless night, nothing more than a scent ...

Just Like Honey
how many things have I looked up in a lifetime of looking things up a silent prayer just the moon on the road I will never wake up and play the piano the days are stacked against what we think we are it's nearly impossible to surprise ourselves. I've decided to make up my mind about nothing I've decided to finish my life disguised as a creek I swam in the river and then I forgot it was water. I'm just trying to unlearn the Universe how easy it glows, how easy it dims the firefly, the night in your...
