I 1895 afleverede den anerkendte kunstner Louis Hasselriis den voluminøse skulptur Danmarksmonumentet. Skulpturen blev præsenteret med pomp og pragt på sin nye placering foran Statens Museum for Kunst. Men dommen var hård: Skulpturen blev straks latterliggjort og hånet.
Allerhelst ville man have monumentet helt ud af syne og 22 år efter præsentationen lykkedes det at få monumentet gemt godt og grundigt væk i nærliggende Østre Anlæg.

Det skjulte maleri på SMK er et af de værker, hvis betydning kan være svær at komme frem til.
