The Annunciation - Season of Joy | Luke 1:26-38 by Fr. James Kubicki, SJ
Have you ever held your breath waiting for someone to reply, hoping almost desperately that they will say yes to something that you ask them to do? Well, back in the 12th century, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux imagined the Archangel Gabriel waiting desperately for the Blessed Virgin Mary to respond to God's proposal that she become the mother of his child. In a homily, Bernard said the following: “You have heard of Virgin that you will conceive and bear a son. The angel awaits an answer. It is time for him to return to God who sent him...

St. Bernard of Clairvaux - On Loving God Part II
"You want me to tell you why God is to be loved and how much.I answer, the reason for loving God is God Himself; and the measure of love due to Him is immeasurable love. . . ."Saint Bernard's On Loving God is one of his most delightful, and most widely read, works. It stands in the tradition of the Fathers of the Church, but it carries patristic teaching into the Middle Ages and into the cloister. Saint Bernard of Clarivaux - Four Degrees of the Love of God
Saint Bernard of Clairvaux was an incredibly charismatic figure from our Church history. One can think that charisma comes from a personal giftedness to persuade, but perhaps Bernard's magnetism on others came from his nearness to God. His fourth degree of love is somewhat surprising, but reveals what a profound love of God leads to and also why he continues to be a compelling figure six hundred years after his death.

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux
Send us a textThe day Bernard was born, his mother raised him up to Heaven and consecrated him to God. Although she was gentle and loving, she was also firm and resolute. She was attentive to all her children, giving of herself completely, but with this her third born son, she knew in her heart she had been given a special gift from God and she wanted to nurture him and prepare him for his role on earth. The results: Bernard grew up obedient, brave, hardworking and surprisingly unspoiled, not unlike his other siblings....

Twelve Degrees of Humility and Pride by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux - Part One
Here we read the first Part of St. Bernard de Clairvoux's book on Humility and Pride. It contains an interesting preface and summary, as well as the first two chapters of the book. Here we can see how Saint Bernard was requested by his secretary and biographer Godfrey, also known as Geoffrey of Clairvaux, to expand on St. Benedict's Steps of Humility. St. Bernard explains how he was anxious about his ability to do so. He was first worried that he might not be good enough for the project, then that in possibly doing well, he may be praised and...

St Bernard of Clairvaux is considered the last father of the Church and is called the Doctor Mellifluus, or the honey doctor, because his Praise of Jesus Christ flowed like honey.St Bernard instructs us on: The Left Hand and the Right Hand of our infant Lord. How the pride are blind? The difference between the widom of the world and flesh versus what is peaceable and chaste. How the infant Christ was the fountain of devotion spoken of by Isaiah. MTR(e14) - Saint Bernard
Saint Bernard was born near Dijon, France in the year 1090. At the age of 22, he became a Benedictine monk at Citeaux, the austere abbey of the Cistercian reform. He did not join alone, however, but brought thirty others with him, among whom were relatives, a testimony to his extraordinary influence on others even at that early age. The abbey flourished and sent out groups to make other foundations, one of which was led by Bernard, and settled at what became known as Clairvaux. It became the center of the Cistercian reform for all of Europe.

How do you start adding living mulch to your garden? One of the simplest ways, is just to look for the spots in your garden that are bare. Look for the open areas and start there. Look under your shrubs. Look along the edges of your beds. Instead of adding another layer of mulch, add plants. Think about planting these living mulches in terms of planting families. In other words, planting en masse. This is what the naturalists and ecologists do naturally; They think about plants in terms of population. New gardeners tend to think of A PLANT and not A PL...
