The social teaching of Benedict XVI
We go back in time to April 2011, when Samuel Gregg, current senior research fellow at the American Institute for Economic Research, discussed the social teaching of Benedict XVI, illustrating how much the pope changed the focus of Christian engagement with political, social, and economic questions. Whether the subject was Islam, ecumenism, the rise and decline of the West, or simply "Who is Jesus Christ?,” Benedict opened up discussions once considered taboo and caused even hardened secularists to rethink some of their positions. Two years after Gregg’s lecture, Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation, and Jorge Bergoglio was elected his...

And remember, the WEF is the place where leaders of large corporations come together with the heads of governments and big NGOs to talk about what should be happening in the world, and how the economy should be developing, and how we deal with political problems, social problems, environmental problems... and it’s a very corporatist mindset, but it’s also reflective of the way that with the failure of central planning, the desire of many p...

This week, Eric Kohn, Sam Gregg, and Dan Hugger discuss everything surrounding the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned previous precedents in Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. Why has most of the reaction been about the policy implications flowing from the decision and not what the Supreme Court actually wrote and held in Dobbs? What does that say about civics education in America right now? What should we take away from the concurring opinions filed by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Clarence Thomas? What, if a...

Reason, Faith, and the Struggle for Western Civilization by Samuel Gregg
'Reason, Faith, and the Struggle for Western Civilization' by Samuel Gregg covers two subjects which are critically important for all of us to comprehend: the relationship between rationality and religious belief for one, and the legacy and destiny of the West for another. Gregg argues clearly and concisely here that Western Civilization is predicated on the synthesis of faith and reason. Instead of choosing one or the other, the melding together of Jewish belief and Greek thought in Christianity made possible the greatest and surest improvement in human quality of life ever, bar none. So what is Western Civilization, anyway? The term itself is under assault from progressives, as if the very notion is somehow passé and is not inclusive enough in a globalized world. But, the fact is, our daily lives in the U.S and throughout much of the world are governed by core values and concepts that grow out of two inextricably linked aspects of the human condition: faith and reason.
