Mon dernier t'aime / collab. w Samy ben Rabah

The Funeral March of the Möbius Strippers
As the name implies, Möbius Strippers are inhabitants of the Möbius Strip, which is this strange surface with only one side. During their funeral procession, the Strippers walk endlessly on the strip without ever reaching the cemetery as they always come back to the same point, continuously playing the funeral march all the while. Believe it or not, they are still marching as I type these words. Please note that you have to play these 8 seconds in a loop to get the full Möbius Strip experience, but beware that it could then run into hours if you don...

Celestial Need (with CrazyCompass)
( this was posted earlier by CrazyCompass). Nata had the good idea to add her voice on one of my tracks (Kind of Superfluous https://soundcloud.com/samybr/kind-of-supefluous). I never imagined a voice when I made this music and this came as a very good surprise. Thank you Nata! Vocals, drawing: Nata Boundariver @crazycompass Music: Samy Ben Rabah

When I wrote that "Saz Explorations IV" was the last one, it was a total lie. This is hopefully a forgivable lie.

Saz Explorations IV
My last saz exploration track. This time it seems to have drifted to the African continent - I guess because of an increased tectonic plate activity , what else?. Not playing with a pick (called 'mızrap') on this one, but fingerpicking. This gives a totally different feeling and inspiration on the instrument. After these explorations I'll try to study a more "authentic" way of playing and try some Ottoman/Turkish music - albeit modestly and superficially, the goal is to have fun!

МАЯКИ / Lighthouses (Samy Ben Rabah & Crazy Compass)
Nata (aka Crazy Compass @crazycompass) did the vocals on this music I made. This is a poem of hers in Russian. She added Black Sea atmospherics. Nata Boundariver @crazycompass - poem and voices Ясный-Svetly @jasny-svetly - base drums (August 2015) Black Sea (Batumi / Georgia / july 2016) Me: music Thank you Nata and Ясный-Svetly! Drawing by Nata Boundariver. The poem in Russian - МАЯКИ [Маяки] мне указывали путь. English LIGHTHOUSES (pidgin-version) The [Lighthouses] have pointed the way for me. The eyes of [Sailors] shined. They were the stars of the Big Dipper. My ship was breathing with the sea to its very foundations - to the bottom - to the ground. The sea breathed. And its breath carried me away further and further. I didn't meet more ships. I forgot what it is. Only the eyes of [Sailors] dreamed to me. And they called me behind themselves. And I sailed smoothly through the waves. And the waves beat against the board.

Amore Che Vieni, Amore Che Vai (cover)
During a recent road trip I discovered in a friend's car a cd from Fabrizio De André , a celebrated Italian poet, musician, songwriter and singer and his song "Amore che vieni, Amore che vai", a beautiful and poignant love song talking about love coming and going. I liked it so much that I decided to make a cover whose painful result you're listening at right now. Me: trying to sing, in Italian, arrangement, guitar, bass, mandolin, mixing, coffee service Here are the lyrics, in Italian. It's about love. Andromeda
Heard this piece playing in loop at the last refueling station before entering the Andromeda galaxy. I found it was a good repetitive and relaxing piece of cosmic elevator music so I asked the lady at the counter for the cd and a cheese sandwich for which I got a discount. It was a good move and money well spent - I still had 0.5 kpc to fly!

Petite musique d'automne
Petite = Little Musique = Music Automne = Autumn ================ = Little Autumn Music (French is not that complicated after all) I was trying some sort of classical piece on the mandolin. I might have heard bits or patterns here and there, so if you recognise something, let me know. Warning contains some string/fret buzzing and all sorts of unplanned noise and imperfections. I should probably re-record the thing

Jeff sent me a splendid dilruba track and I added the mandolin. That's pretty much it. Ambient Jor (Samy Ben Rabah & Martin Kirwan)
I'm happy that this is my first collaboration with Martin Kirwan (@martkirwan)! I play the mandolin part on a drone track that Martin created. He also plays the e-bow part which is that great voice-like singing you can hear. Here "Jor" refers to the form played in instrumental hindustani music where "chikaris" (the drone strings) are played in a pulsating manner, which I kind of mimic by playing the mandolin with delay. Thank you Martin for your collaboration! Martin Kirwan(@martkirwan):Drone, e-bow Me: Mandolin Photo: a picture I took from Grožnjan, a town in Istria.

L'arbre à palabres
Rough piece on the mandolin for this afternoon. You can even hear some sloppy fingering - proof that it's not generated by a computer (although...). In French, "arbre à palabres" refers to the tree under which people gather to discuss, debate or listen to the village sage. It's a tradition usually associated with some African cultures but you've probably seen it somewhere else - people talking under the shade of a tree.

Točka The Panda
A little piece on the mandolin created this Saturday afternoon after a nap. Crappy microphone + crappy sound card = crappy sound + scratches. No mystery to this equation. Točka (pronounced tochka) means "dot" or "spot" in Croatian and is the name we gave to a little kitten who appeared one day in the courtyard (pictured). That's all it is really. August 14th 2017: The little Točka left us yesterday. Too soon. She was very fun and sweet. You can see some pics of her here: https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/tockathepanda

Indus
Piece I initially started when playing some notes of raga Marwa (one of my favorites!) on the mandolin, but which degenerated into something totally unrelated. Mandolin, guitar played by myself + bass/percussion/drums layered on top. I was planing to add a small alap (slow introduction) at the beginning - maybe later! Sorry for the horrible sound and mixing! It seems that it comes better when listening with headphones.

Quest for Something
Piece I created with mandolin/guitars + other instruments added electronically. Most of the mandolin parts are recorded twice and superimposed, which might give an impression that there were a lot of people playing. - but that was just me playing at different positions in space-time. Pictured: Squeaky a.k.a Squeak, the South Indian cat (http://instagram.com/thedailysqueak) who doesn't like music and is just trying to find a spot to sleep on the sofa.
