Friendship amidst the Indian National Struggle ft. Amb. TCA Raghavan
The story of the Indian National Movement is often told from the accounts of great leaders like Gandhi, Nehru or Patel. However, India’s freedom struggle was a great cause that had attracted many young and bright minds of India at the time—Sarojini Naidu, Asaf Ali, Syed Hossain, and friends. The shared cause built many friendships—some survived the test of time, some did not; but their personal exchanges draw a vivid picture of the freedom struggle. We discuss:* Introducing the circle of friends* Sarojini, the Boss-woman* Asaf Ali and friends’ thoughts on Nationalism* The importance of Khilafat movement for elite muslims* Mass movements and communal tensions* Moderates to Radicals* Was separate electorate the original sin?* What did the friends think about a separate nation?* Opposing ideas of the national movement* Ideas about Pakistan* The impact of partition* Aruna and Asaf Ali’s marriagePuliyabaazi is now available on Youtube with video.Read:Circles Of Freedom :Friendship, Love And Loyalty in the Indian National Struggle by T.C.A. Women, Sports, and Citizenship. Sohini Chattopadhyay
The Day I Became a Runner We discuss:* Compromised Citizenship of Women* Running in public gaze* Lack of Public Spaces in India* The role of regulation in safe cities* Women in Athletics* Accidental Feminists* Usha’s comeback after motherhood* Santhi’s story* Dividing sports into strict categoriesAlso, please note that Puliyabaazi is now available on Youtube with video. Cautionary Tales with Tim Harford
The Poet Who Toppled The British Empire
India, 1930. Sarojini Naidu is marching towards a British-controlled saltwork; behind her is a long column of protestors all dressed in white. The great campaigner for India's Independence, Gandhi, is now in jail. In his place, he's chosen Naidu to lead this movement against the hard and fearsome British Empire. Naidu and her marchers want change, and they want to achieve it peacefully. India's fate, they believe, depends on a non-violent path to resistance. Today, there will be violence. But it won't come from them. This is the final episode in a four-part series a...

Parlando - Where Music and Words Meet
The Coromandel Fishers
Sarojini Naidu's poem of stalwart Bengali fishermen asked to be sung, so I sang it. The author may have had a melody in mind, as she published this in a section of her poetry she called "Folk Songs." Naidu began as a promising poet ("The Nightengale of India") but left verse to for work for women's suffrage and Indian independence. The Parlando Project takes words (usually literary poetry) and combines them with original music. We've done nearly 750 of these over the years, and you can find them and remarks about our encounters with the poetry at our a...

Madhushala: exploring the soul of Bachchan's timeless poetry
32. Bachchan’s poetic introduction with Sarojini and Nehru-Indira / सरोजिनी नायडू, इंदिरा नेहरू से बच्चन का कविताई परिचय (Madhushala)
In the previous episode, we spoke about the insults that Bachchan has to endure during his Pioneer Press days and how later in his life, he took a sort of revenge on society for such old insults. In this episode, we speak about an interesting introduction with Sarojini Naidu and the India-Nehru family. ------------- अपने अंगूरों से तन में हमने भर ली है हाला, क्या कहते हो, शेख, नरक में हमें तपाएगी ज्वाला, तब तो मदिरा खूब खिंचेगी और पिएगा भी कोई, हमें नरक की ज्वाला में भी दीख पड़ेगी मधुशाला (७५) -------------------- Welcome to Madhushala Podcast (मधुशाला), based on Harivansh Rai Bachchan's epic poetry, written in 1935 and part of the trilogy of Madhubala and Madhukalash.
