Episode 93: The Warriors (1979)
Welcome back to Film Haven Reivews!!! This week we are finishing up our Walter Hill: Origins theme with possibly his most famous film, The Warriors (1979).This movie is an icon and now after watching it, I can see why. There is tons of memorable imagery, with the various different gangs being displayed and the grimey but intriguing setting of 1970s NYC, and there's also a great plot structure with the titular Warriors having to try and escape the city while every gang in the Bronx is trying to take them out. I gave this film an 8/10...

Episode 92: The Driver (1978)
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing our Walter Hill: Origins theme with the very cool and influential The Driver (1978). While this was certainly a very stylistic film, it was also pretty boring and that weighed down the enjoyement for me. It is certainly influential but that doesn't always mean it holds up amazingly. I gave this film a 7.5/10 for giving some great car chase scenes, flashes of brilliance in the cinematography, but stale characters that failed to fully entertain. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting the new "Walter Hill: Origins" theme with his directorial debut Hard Times (1975). There are no surprises with this film, but it offers everything you could want from a psuedo-southern western involving Charles Bronson cage fighting increasingly difficualt opponents. I gave this film an 8/10 for haveing a great setting, wonderful cosutme design, and a very straighforward but enjoyable narrative that kept me highly entertained throughout its length. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are concluding out "Ingrid Bergman" theme with the famous Alfred Hitchcock film Notorious (1946). While I very much enjoyed this movie, I found myself a little surprised at how high the critical ratings are. On imdb this film has a 100 Metascore and that seems a little overblown to me. However, I still gave this movie a 7.5/10 for being a highly entertaining spy romance and filled with some good camerawork and great performances from Bergman and Grant. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are continuing out "Masters of Giallo" theme with the enjoyable and mysterious Lucio Fulci film, The Psychic (1977).This film was much more enjoyable than last week's Deep Red, with a narrative that was consistently engaging and a score and cinematography that wasn't constantly taking me out of the film. Welcome back to Flim Haven Reviews!! This week we are starting a whole new theme of "Slasher Satire" with the Friday the 13th Parody film The Final Girls (2015). I really appreciate this film's concept, being a sort of magic realist time loop movie where people get sucked into a movie, but unfortunatley the execution wasn't all the way there. I gave this film a 6.5/10 for being too similar to Ozo's older films, while not being as good, so while there were some redeemable aspects, mainly the main character's performance, the overall vibe of the film was off and I didn't get much out of it.

Episode 50: Bones and All (2022)
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are continuing our "Arthouse Cannibalism" theme with the disturbing but beautiful Bones and All (2022). It is so interesting how beatiful this film was while also being deeply disturbing and being about one of the most taboo acts in human society. I loved how cannibalism was used as a thematic vessel to discuss very common emotions like feeling outcasted or left out. I gave this film an 8.5/10 for being so incredibly shot, acted, and written. The concept was very interesting and the vibe was almost hypnotically engaging.

Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are closing out our Home Invasion Thriller theme with the influential When a Stranger Calls (1979). Unfortunately, just because a film is influential doesn't mean it is essential, and that is sadly the case with this film, as its boring middle half brings the entire film down and makes it basically not worth starting in the first place. I would almost suggest just watching the intro scene and then turning it off. I gave this a 5/10 because there were flashes of brilliance and there is a reason that this f...

Welcome back to Film Haven Reveiws!! This week we are continuing our theme of Home Invasion Thrillers with the very supernatural/psychological Silent House (2011). This one is unique in that is shot in real time, being made to seem like everything was shot in one take (despite having a few cuts hidden throughout the film) and the hint of supernatural and pyschological elements made it mysterious as well. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing our theme of "Godzilla" movies with the politically poignant Shin Godzilla (2016). The Godzilla in this movie is WEIRD, at first, and then he gets INTENSE. It was really cool to see a Godzilla movie where he evolved into different forms, it was also interesting to see Godzilla as a force of nature, equivalent to a natural disaster. The movie takes the approach of telling the story from the perspective of the government officials who are tasked with dealing with Godzilla and all of their political machinations. I...

Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting a new theme covering a classic monster, THE KING OF MONSTERS, Godzilla. We are starting this theme off with the newest Godzilla movie Godzilla Minus One (2023). I was blown away by this incredibly well made Japanese film. To me, it seems the Japanese (obviously) make the best Godzilla movies and a big part of that is because in their films, Godzilla is more than a monster, he's also a message, a metaphor, and a god. The main characters might not know how to act but they do know how to swing a sword, and for a movie of this caliber I'd say that's all they needed to know. I gave this a 6/10 for being the least interesting of the theme but still...

Episode 8: The Beastmaster (1982)
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews! This week we are continuing our ill-fated sword and sorcery theme with The Beastmaster (1982). This derpy but lovable film thoroughly entertained me and despite some bad costumes and hokey acting, there was plenty to love and enjoy about this Conan knock off. I gave this film a 7/10 for delivering on exactly what it set out to do and for having lots of cute animals like Kodo and Podo the twin ferrets! Episode 7: Legend (1985)
Welcome Back to Film Haven Reviews! This week we are starting a whole new theme: ill-Fated Sword and Scorery! 80s Sword and Sorcery movies that had abysmally low critical ratings but comparitively high userscores. I'm going to be taking a look at these next three films and trying to figure out where the disparity is coming from, and what it is a that makes these films so seemingly enjoyable, while also being universially panned by critics. To start us off we are taking a look at the box office disaster that is Ridley Scott's Legend (1985). This film f...

Episode 6: See You Up There (2017)
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews! This we're finishing up our WWI Theme with the ecentric and stylish See You Up There! This film was a mixed bag for me, as the first half seemed to have an energy that the second half couldn't compete with, but the uniqueness of the premise and the creativity of the cinematography help to keep my overall score high. I gave this a 7.8/10 for having a unique vision as well as a heart, but a pacing that stalls out over time. For my full written review feel free to fo...

Episdoe 5: Paths of Glory (1957)
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews! This week we we're continuing the theme of "WWI Movies" with the Stanley Kubrick classic Paths of Glory! Unsurprisingly I loved this film! Instead of the All Quiet on the Western Front approach of the "sweeping epic", Paths of Glory breaks down one scenario and pulls out moral ponderances on the nature of power and the struggles between class amidst one of the world's deadliest conflicts. I gave this a 9/10 for its deep messaging, incredible production design, and quick pace (coming in at a brisk screentime of 88 minutes), not to mention t...
