Jazz Profiles presented by Tim Owens & 32 Bar Blues
Sonny Rollins
A giant by any standard and a powerful presence in jazz, Sonny Rollins is a master of improvisation in an art form that is drenched in spontaneity. Yet his roots are as deep as they are deeply American, and he both celebrates tradition and innovates whenever he plays his sax. He has shared the stage with such legends as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, and Dizzy Gillespie – and he has re-shaped modern jazz many times over the course of a career lasting more than 60 years. As part of the Peabody Award-winning documentary series “Jazz Profi...

Episode 319: Sonny Rollins, Part 2
Part two of my two part series on Sonny Rollins, inspired by Saxophon Colossus by Aidan Levy. I play and introduce eight selections, ranging from 1951 up to his last studio album in 2006. It includes two of his first recordings, a recording where he played on a Thelonious Monk album, a selection from his 2001 grammy winning album, and two collaborations with non-jazz stars: Leonard Cohen and The Rolling Stones. And the episode starts with one of his compositions that has become a jazz standard, playing with Clifford Brown, Richie Powell, George Morrow, and Max Roach.

Episode 318: Sonny Rollins, Part 1
This episode was inspired by my reading Saxophone Colossus: The Life and Music of Sonny Rollins. Thanks to Mark Vasey for giving me this book. For these two episodes I focus more on the music than on his life....although both are fascinating. Starting with his first recording in 1951, with Miles Davis, I play tracks from some of his 46 + classic albums. You'll also hear something from his Sonny Meets Hawk album of 1963, where he teamed up with his idol, Coleman Hawkins. At the time of recording this episode, Sonny Rollins is still alive and retired.

Tonight`s Jazz Feature can be deemed a classic. It was the second album under Sonny Rollins` name since his return to the Jazz scene in late 1955 as a new member of the legendary band, the Max Roach/Clifford Brown Quintet. It was decided by Rollins and Prestige Records owner that Sonny could record with the Max Roach/Clifford Brown group with musical choices by Rollins and with Rollins` name on the album title.
O protesto do Rollins no caso do disco difere do...

There is no living artist in the Jazz firmament more revered than Sonny Rollins. He is admired for, among other things, eluding his audience's expectations of him. Never was this more true than on July 19, 1985 when he performed a set entirely unaccompanied in the Sculpture Garden at the Museum of Modern Art. Listening to this set, the listener gets to hear Sonny working the puzzles, rebuses, puns and equations that inform his best improvisations. It is as revealing as the glass and steel structure of the modern buildings that surrounded MoMA. And who was it that invited Sonny Rollins to do that...

Sonny Rollins

Never was this more true than on July 19, 1985 when he performed a set entirely unaccompanied in the Sculpture Garden at the Museum of Modern Art. Listening to this set, the listener gets to hear Sonny working the puzzles, rebuses, puns and equations that inform his best improvisations. Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus (Album Review)
In the world of the saxophone, Coltrane comes to my mind first, but in 1949 there was a man from Sugar Hill in the neighborhoods of Harlem who played his first concert using his tenor saxophone. Walter Theodore “Sonny” Rollins, was born on September 7, 1930, in New York City. Sonny began his life in music playing the piano. He would later switch to the alto sax and in 1946 made the decision to switch again to the tenor saxophone. This decision would make Sonny one of the most well versed, tenor sax jazz soloists in the world. I wanted to revi...

Sonny Rollins

In 1963 the great tenorist Sonny Rollins provided one of the high points of Geoffrey's jazz life in a gig at the Minor Key in Detroit. Fresh from the famous sabbatical which produced his album The Bridge, he was in towering form. Nearly four decades later in October 1999 Rollins came to London for a performance at the Barbican just a few days after the fatal rail crash ou...

This week, the great tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins turned 90 years old. To celebrate, we’re revisiting my 2017 interview with this 1983 NEA Jazz Master and 2010 National Medal of Arts recipient. Sonny Rollins has been the jazz player’s jazz player and acknowledged as jazz’s greatest living improviser. He’s always been an adventurous musician-- unafraid to change or to embrace the sounds of calypso, Latin, avant-garde, funk and R&B. His solo work is unsurpassed-- either playing solo gigs or when performing with his band launching into long, extemporaneous unaccompanied cadenzas. As he said in the interview, “I like to play by...
