Deadly ThereminDeadly ThereminThe Cursed (2021)Released in the Sundance Film Festival in the cursed year of 2020 as Eight for Silver, The Cursed is a 19th-century victorian gothic folk horror featuring a familiar monster as an allegory for dwelling identities within the same body: the civilized human and the bestial monster. Desaturated color pallettes and muted, modest garments set the tone for foggy gray skies by day, and nightmares inhabited by human scarecrows and silver fangs by night. Directed by Sean Ellis, The Cursed is a suprisingly slow-burn lycanthrope film supernaturally reprimanding white colonialism, extending the legacy of violence to a whole lineage within this...2025-01-2816 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminCarnival of Souls (1962)A car crash and a new beginning. Carnival of Souls depicts the solitude of provincial living in the southwest United States in the 1960s from the perspective of a woman who also works as a church organ player. Despite her efforts to live a normal life, she is haunted by a ghostly presence that leads her into learning wild secrets about her own existence. This is my season finale, an incredibly interesting series of plot twist coming from many levels fading in and out in style between scenes. The episode contains huge spoilers so I recommend you watch it...2024-09-2313 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminUncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010)After an year-long hybernation period, I have returned from the darkness bringing you Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, a film that flatens many existences and realms once separated by the restrictions of time, space, and societal norms. A beautiful visual rendering of a book from 1983 called A Man Who Can Recall His Past Lives by Buddhist abbot Phra Sripariyattiwet. A terminal illness thins out otherwise physical barriers of existence as Boonmee navigates through past lives to find reason and understanding. 2024-07-0912 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminThe Phantom Carriage (1921)Legend goes that the last person to die on New Years' Eve becomes the Coachman in charge of collecting the souls of the dead until someone else takes their place in this nefarious task. The Phantom Carriage is a silent-film from what is known as the Golden Era of Swedish cinema. Directer and Starred by Victor Sjostrom, this classic is a masterclass in special effects and spectral superimposition with the most beautiful soundtrack by Matti Bye.2023-08-2517 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminHis House (2020)It's hard to believe this was Remi Week's debut film. His House blurrs the lines of real horror with traditional elements of fictional horror, bringing together an incredibly deep approach to the dichotomic commitments regarding the cultural memory of war refugees. It's delicate, and monstrous simultaneously. You can't miss this. 2022-12-2017 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminRingu (1998)Directed by Hideo Nakata, the J-horror masterpiece Ringu was based on a book released a few years earlier and it tells the tale of the vengeful spirit of a child that comes out of the screen to kill you if you watch their Stan Brakhagesque cursed tape! Sadako's aesthetic has become an universal pop culture symbol for fear and the deadly presence of beings from the aftelife in relation to elements familiar to us and present in our daily lives, such as TV devices -- and VHS tapes.  2022-10-0419 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminThe Shining (1980)A new season begins in this Deadly Theremin with one of the most famous films of the horror genre. Directed by Stanley Kubrik and based on a novel with the same name written by Stephen King, The Shining touches classic themes that frightens, in a suspense-building-but-also-already-kind-of-there atmosphere, different generations since its first release. It speaks directly to our most primal fears in a brutal fashion (yes, I am thinking about the elevator of blood). 2022-07-1920 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminBacurau (2019)A season finale não podia terminar em melhor companhia. 2021-09-1414 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminEsta Noite Reencarnarei no Teu Cadáver (1967)I hope my non-Brazilian fans will forgive me, but this season will be a Brazilian Version, Herbert Richards. Man (1973)A missing girl in a strange Scottish village, with uncomfortably happy folk songs, naked dancing and rituals, The Wicker Man is one of those classic films that you can't stop thinking about. It's an extremely unsettling murder mystery with amazing plot twists and a breathtaking climax. This bonus episode was an amazing recommendation from a friend, and I analyzed while having a Guinness, just like the villagers at the landlord's bar. I hope you enjoy it, or not. It's your funeral. 2021-06-0911 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminThe Ritual (2017)Four Londoner men decide to go on a hike in memoriam of their friend in Sweden. What could go wrong, you think? Ancient woods are a commonplace for Ancient pagan religions, their followers, and sometimes even the bloodthirsty gods they worship. The cinematography will remind of The Blair Witch Project (which I previously analyzed), and the god behaves like the Lovecraftian Shub-Niggurath taking sacrifices and never leaving the woods. The novel is equally awesome and I definetely recommend it! It pairs really well with a vodka sour, the adventurous drink you put raw egg whites in. Give it a...2021-03-0112 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminChildren of the Corn (1984)[SPOILER ALERT] Loosely based on a Stephen King's novel with the same name, Children of the Corn explores a corn-god cult led and worshiped by cute little murderous children from the countryside of the United States. This low-budget feature draws a parallel between religious fanaticism, with hints of the Old Testament and some corn farming. The first one gives no room for a sequel, but they just kept popping. Like corn. It eventually turned into an awfully stretched franchise that doesn't even give you crazy gory deaths (except for maybe one or two). You probably won't enjoy this movie...2021-02-0118 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminSanta Sangre (1989)The jewel of Mexican Horror, Santa Sangre explores Life and Death using Symbolism to the bone . It's the story of the child magician Fenix and his way to adulthood while dealing with traumas, imaginary snakes and an armless bloodthirst vengeful mother devout to a strange cult that worships Santa Sangre. It's a full experience, you will want to look away, look closer, laugh, cry, and get a little scared - or least minimaly grossed out- by the gory deaths. Jodorowsky is one of my favorite directors, so consider this my offering to the Winter Solstice. ...2020-12-2212 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminHereditary (2018)Released in 2018 by studio A24, Hereditary invites you to discover what's behind a series of strange dark events that surround the Graham Family and their History of secrecy, death and madness. The atmosphere is very unsettling and you will most definetely hold your breath for the remaining 10 minutes of the movie. The director Ari Aster mentions in an interview that despite the suffering present in every single one of the characters, you feel like you're supposed to like them, in opposite to other unsettling crazy-transition films such as"the cook, the thief, his wife and her lover". But that's...2020-12-2113 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminMandy (2018)This is not my average alone-in-the-dark episode. The idea was to debut season 2 by simulating those weird conversations you wanna eavesdrop at a dive bar after work between two old friends. So grab a beer, and pretend Lloyd's polishing glasses in front of you. [SPOILER ALERT] Mandy was released in 2018 and it has one of the most beautiful color palettes I've ever seen in a gore movie. Directed by Panos Cosmatos and with Nicholas Cage as a broken man seeking revenge in the classic Cage style, with an atmospheric-psychedelic-doom-metal soundtrack connecting it all to create this...2020-12-0927 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminBlack Sunday/The Mask of Satan (1960)[SPOILER ALERT] A season finale asks for Italian horror. Directed by Mario Bava, Black Sunday is a classic referenced by directors such as Coppola and Tim Burton.  A vampire witch princess is murdered by her own brother and swears revenge upon him and all future generations.  There's an usual number of gruesome deaths for 1960, making this a movie difficult to find (It was prohibited in the UK until 1982 and even then, heavily censored), but pleasing to watch.  I hope you enjoyed The Witch's Brew as much as I did.  Subscribe for upda...2020-09-1813 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminThe Blair Witch Project (1999)The first and most successful case of viral marketing online, the Blair Witch Project debuted the found footage era in the horror genre. Everyone knows what happens to these three film college students who go missing into the woods of Burkitsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary on the Legend of the Blair Witch back in 1994. A $60,000 budget that raised $248,000,000 in the box office became a pop culture icon for the millennial generation because of the level of improvisation and advertisement through an official website - www.blairwitch.com - and a mockumentary called "The Curse of The Blair Witch" b...2020-09-0916 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminThe Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)[SPOILER ALERT] The director decided to leave the main character's identity anonymous (Jane Doe), so I took the liberty to refer to the assistant characters of Brian Cox (Martin) and Emile Hirsch (Austin)equally nameless as Dad and Son. A truly horrifying one-room movie set in a morgue, this family of coroners tries to determine the mortis causa of our Jane Doe. A three century long trail of bodies and a gothic Sherlock Holmes vibe awaits you. Enjoy. Or not. It's your funeral. Rest In Peace2020-09-0217 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminThe VVitch (2015)[SPOILER ALERT] Allow me to introduce you to the confused and terrifying life of the first settlers of the New World through this New England folktale set in 1640. We follow a family of colonists attempting to endure and overcome the Wilderness, who ends up consuming them. With a dark and agonizing atmosphere, bumped by an original and excruciating soundtrack, you will need to bring some liquid courage to this one. The VVitch will bring back all your childhood fears and nightmares. Enjoy it, or not. It's your funeral. Rest in Peace, people. 2020-08-2618 minDeadly ThereminDeadly ThereminSuspiria (1977)[SPOILER ALERT] Director Dario Argento's masterpiece, Suspiria, stands as one of the most beautiful horror films ever made. A somber, yet whimsical fairy tale narrative with notes of gore and mystery, this movie was groundbreaking in terms of production, special effects and original soundtrack.  Unfortunately this is only available on Tubi, but you can always download/rent it before listening to this podcast. Or not. It's your funeral. 2020-08-1914 min
