While many of us may actively vote and participate in state and national elections and politics, far fewer people stay connected in city and local politics. In a metropolis like Bengaluru, voter turnouts and voter awareness remains low during city elections. State governments also have excessive control over most local decisions, and as a result Bengaluru’s BBMP elections are overdue for 2 years now, and we can finally expect to learn the election dates in July 2022. Kathyayini Chamaraj has been writing and working on Bengaluru’s development and urban governance issues for close to 35 years, and has been the Executive Trustee of CIVIC since 2005. As a part of a larger ‘Civil Society Forum’, Kathyayini and her collaborators have put together a ‘Manifesto for BBMP Elections 2022’, which was released in June in an event featuring top political leaders in the city and the state of Karnataka. On Episode 143 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast, Kathyayini explains how democracy doesn’t end with the elections, but needs active Ward Committees and Area Sabhas, with well-defined roles, responsibilities, accountability and transparency.

E28: ISL: Hyderabad FC vs Bengaluru FC
Things have looked up for Bengaluru FC lately, with Sunil Chhetri getting among the goals again and the time managing wins. However, in Hyderabad only one of those streaks would continue, as the team would find out. A late freak equaliser from Robin Singh meant Hyderabad FC and defending champion Bengaluru had to share the spoils in their ISL clash this week. All this despite an early goal from Sunil Chhetri and 1-0 lead for Bengaluru that stood for nearly 90 minutes. Aashin and Dominic review the game in this episode of The Full Time Show.

Udaya Kumar PL started the Inscription Stones of Bangalore group to rescue, revive and rejuvenate the rich written history of Bengaluru. In their efforts, they were responsible for one of the richest archeological findings of the city in decades in a quiet corner of Hebbal. Could Bengaluru's oldest inscription stone tell us the story of the city's first named citizen? What secrets do hero stones (Veeragallu) and other artifacts of history reveal about the development and the history of the city? Udaya Kumar has a wide-ranging conversation with hosts Pavan Srinath and Ganesh Chakravarthi on Episode 15 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast on Inscription Stones and Bengaluru's history. Uday and his collaborators are seeking to crowd-fund a grand, historically appropriate memorial for Bengaluru's first named citizen, and they are doing it in a way where each of us can have a piece of the city's most ancient history right in our homes. Water and Bengaluru.
Time and again, we hear that the city of Bengaluru will run out of water. Depending on where you hear this alarm from, the year could be 2020, 2025 or 2030. Everyone from the BBC to the Niti Aayog to city experts have claimed that the city is doomed. Is this really true? Water is a scarce resource, but water availability is not Bengaluru's challenge, says S Vishwanath, our guest on Episode 13 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast. He says that the real challenge in is the sustainable utilisation and distribution of water, and this is where the government, communities and individuals have play their role in doing so. S Vishwanath is the founder of Rainwater Club and is a Director at Biome Environmental Trust. He has worked extensively on water and sanitation issues in Bengaluru, Karnataka and India. Vishwanath is popular on social media as @Zenrainman, and has been tireless in his efforts to educate people about water and sanitation, and what solutions can make a difference at every level of action. Vishwanath talks to hosts Pavan Srinath and Surya Prakash BS shares a historical perspective to Bengaluru's water woes, and touches on various aspects of water -- from the role of the government and the BWSSB, to groundwater and its management, the role of open wells, borewells and tankers in the city – all the way to wastewater and sewerage, and the role of Bengaluru's many lakes. It is definitely a challenge to provide clean, safe and adequate drinking water to residents of the Bengaluru megapolis, but far from impossible.
