Hoofdredacteur Laure van den Hout koos voor deze aflevering met Bart Lunenburg, uit november 2022. The Titanic with Mr. Stephen Ernst
Today on the Pod we will be discussing the Titanic. As probably all listeners are likely aware, this vessel – infamously touted as unsinkable –sank on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. Of the 2200 people on board, over 1500 people lost their lives that night in the cold, ice ridden Atlantic. This makes it one of the largest maritime disasters in history. As this April 10th marks 112 years since the ship set sail on its doomed journey, I thought it might be a good way to kick things off on the Podcast. The RMS Titanic has been the...

Apple and pear trees are common sights along the South Shore of Nova Scotia, but a new nursery just outside Lunenburg is bringing a vast array of new species of fruit trees to the area. Originally from Germany, Annette Clarke moved to British Columbia in the early 2000’s to study the ecosystems within the old growth forests of the West Coast. Her love of trees is a life-long one, and it eventually led her to open a nursery in that province. But when climate change brought the threat of intensified forest fires and longer-than-usual droughts, Annette began to look for a...

Communication and plebiscites in Lunenburg
At the end of March, a request for proposals for development of Blockhouse Hill in Lunenburg will close. And Mayor Matt Risser says there has always been the intention of sharing those plans with residents before any approvals are given. Some residents say there hasn’t been enough consultation or transparency throughout the process. They’re also asking for a plebiscite or a public meeting over the plans. Risser says there’s always an opportunity to improve communications. And the ultimate plebescite happens during municipal elections.

Governing with consent in Lunenburg
A piece of legislation passed in 2002 called The Lunenburg Commons Act was helped clarify the public use of a 22-acre parcel called Blockhouse Hill. That was property set aside after the settlement of the town in 1753. In 2017, the Liberal MLA for Lunenburg introduced amendments to that act, allowing the elected representatives to make the property available for development. And not surprisingly, many people who are finding out about this now are not pleased. Paula Rennie is one of those residents who says they are still organizing to come up with a strategy. John once lived in Bermuda. For some reason sun and sand just didn’t appeal to him the same way as the cold, harsh, Nova Scotia winters. Despite this quirk John is, last time we checked, perfectly sane. So we’ll have to suppose his love of Bridgewater comes from family ties and long standing community connections. When not pursuing his dream of being the president of an accounting firm founded on the/principles/of providing anxiety reduction and personalized support for small business owners, he’s cooking, playing/old-time/rock& roll, and fussing just a little too much over h...

Episode 009: Virginia’s Rural Broadband Crisis — How the Pandemic Shined a Spotlight on Broadband Access and Affordability
This first appeared in an op-ed I wrote for the Richmond Times-DispatchSHOW NOTESSummary. For rural Virginia counties like Middlesex and Lunenburg, the pandemic has focused attention on dead zones and the pressing need to address remote internet learning for students. Once in-person classes resume, rural counties’ long-term broadband access and affordability needs will remain. This episode explores how the digital divide developed in rural Virginia and why the “band-aid” solutions devised during the pandemic aren’t sustainable. Telecom industry campaign contributions and lobbying serve to limit competition and influence a regulatory environment in Virginia which is one of the three most onerous...

It is our first Open Space Radio episode of 2021, and we're so excited for another year of great conversations on the podcast. To start the year, we're thrilled to be talking with a group of inspiring teenagers from Lunenburg, Massachusetts, who decided to take a middle school project and turn it into something way bigger that would provide them, and others, a safe space to participate in their favorite activity — skateboarding. They realized that access to public recreational spaces was critical, and decided to take matters into their own hands to create a safe, legal place to skateboard through th...

https://www.patreon.com/landlordtenant Hi. So much happened in 2020 that it’s almost crazy. But the story that dominated the headlines this year was the Lunenburg, Nova Scotia mayoral race in October. It wasn’t just the story of municipal politicians Matt Risser and John McGee—it was a high stakes drama about ambition, power, town criers, horses destroying private property, cruel nicknames and a man who’s rumored to have masturbated in a book store. This week, we’ve attempted to recreate the excitement of the Lunenburg election by putting together all the dispatches...
